أناديI call to منamong الإخوانfriends غيرnot مجيبone who answers
وأمدحand I praise بالأشعارwith poems غيرnot مثيبone who rewards
I call to one among my friends who gives no answer,
I call out to companions who do not respond,
And praise in verse one who gives no reward.
And praise in verse those who do not reward.

لأنفاسto the breaths of نفسيmy soul كيفhowever شئتyou wish فذوبيso melt away
And I pass days whose worries say
I spend days with worries that say,
To my soul's breaths: 'So melt away however you wish.'
Melt away, O my soul, however you wish!
ومستخبرand an inquirer ماwhat بالmatter حالكyour condition حالكاًdark

And someone asked, 'Why is your condition so dark?'
I asked how was your state,
So I said, 'An illness that has had no physician's aid.'
And you said, "I'm sick, uncured by any doctor."
ولاand no خيرgood فيin أسجاعrhymed utterances منone who جاعhungered بطنهhis belly
ولوand even if أعربتthey spoke eloquently يوماًone day بلحنto a melody of عريبʿArīb
Nor is there any good in the rhymes of one whose belly hungers,
No good comes from one whose stomach hungers
Even if one day they were voiced eloquently to ʿArīb's melody.
Even if he eloquently spoke pure Arabic one day.
ومنand whoever ألزمmade bear الإخوانfriends ذنبthe fault of زمانهhis times
أتىcame بضلالwith an error فيin الزمانthe age عجيبstrange
And whoever makes his friends bear the blame for his times
He who holds his companions to blame for the sin of time
Commits a strange error in this age.
Has brought about amazing misguidance in this age.

I burden them with what is not permissible, as though
I burden them with what is not permissible, as though
I had thrust unripe grapes upon them in exchange for raisins.
I had ladled onto them hot embers with raisins.
