Atiyya, if you meet the soul of Muhammad,

your brother, and your two noble brothers who went before,

greet them—may you never suffer—and tell them:

"After you, I made your father drink a draught of bereavement."

And swear to them that I—by the mercy of their loss—

cool my sorrows, though their cauldron boils.

And indeed, bereavement's wounds reopen as they heal,

and one stricken finds no healing for all time.

And I see others' children with sorrow,

so I weep for my offspring and the loss of what consoles me.

And none among the sons of this generation is like you,

just as none among their fathers is like me.

May God water the days of togetherness with you, and never water

the calamities of days that, through you, tore my family apart.

O my separation from you, and O my burning grief for you!

They have indeed loosed my tears and fettered my reason.

May the All-Merciful's mercy bring us together,

whether soon or after a delay.
