Indeed, we have a mighty lion.

So ask about us, if you are ignorant of us:

Qays and Qahtan, and question Wa'il.

They found no broken-nocked, headless shaft among us,

In the days when they unleashed grievous strife.

Then one of ours ground them down, breast to breast,

After they had already grappled with deadly perils—

A keen blade, cleaving through the joints,

Girded for action, his trailing hems raised high.

So it was a grim and dreadful day.

And war conceived, though she had been barren.

    He lifted hardship and tribulations

From his people, and stilled the upheavals.

And he struck the Azd at dawn with grievous bereavement,

Leaving their snare-setters turned to archers,

Sending the great armies ahead of him:

Stalwart, in scattered bands, like stags,

    Hollow-bellied, lean and gaunt,

Swimming along, you would take them for falcons,

Champing the bits within their jaws,

In squadrons you would take for white crags.

They drain the waterholes the day they come to drink,

And draw the ancient, copious wells dry.

You hear, as they are urged, a mingled din among them,

Low whinnies answering the neighing steeds.

He struck them at dawn in their homes with mighty steeds,

Bearing the fierce lions of the thicket,

Clad for battle in coats of mail,

White, you would take them for shallow pools

On a day when northerly winds blew fiercely,

Wearing tunics next to the skin beneath them.

And they unsheathed their Indian blades,

Striking crushing blows that hacked necks into pieces.

You hear their clanging against the helmets.

So they left their upper parts cast down,

And left them in scattered little bands:

One hacked apart, another fleeing for refuge,

Sparing no effort, his hackles bristling,

By a mere breath he escaped the snares.
