أَغْرَيْتَyou incited بيagainst me سَقَماًa sickness عَلَيْfor
كَyou وَنِمْتَand you slept عَنْheedless of لَيْلِيmy night الطَّوِيلِthe long
You loosed upon me a sickness for
you, and slept, heedless of my long night.
وَبَخِلْتَand you were miserly بِالشَّكْوىwith complaint إِلَيْto
كَyou وَأَيُّand what عُذْرٍexcuse لِلْبَخِيلِfor the miser
And you begrudged my complaining to
you—and what excuse has a miser?
فَكَأَنَّماso it is as though بَخِلَwas miserly الضَّناwasting sickness
بِضَناwith the sickness of ضَنايَmy sickness مِنَfrom النُّحُولِemaciation
So it is as though sickness itself were miserly
with the sickness of my sickness, from emaciation.
وَطَبِيبُand the physician of هَجْرِكَyour estrangement لاnot يَجُوgives generously (continued)
دُcompletion of 'gives generously' بِهَجْرِwith abandoning هَجْرِكَyour estrangement لِلْعَلِيلِto the sick man
And the physician of your estrangement does not grant
the sick man an end to your estrangement.
فَإِذاso if أَرَدْتَyou wish عِيَادَتيvisiting me in my sickness
فَاسْأَلْthen ask عَنِabout الحَيِّthe living one القَتِيلِthe slain one
So if you wish to visit me in my sickness,
then ask after the living yet slain.
وانْظُرْand look إِلىat رُوحٍa soul جَرَتْflowed
And look at a soul that has flowed
within an upright yet impossible form.
حُكْمُthe rule of الهَوىpassion فيin أَخْذِهاseizing it
حُكْمُthe rule of العَزِيزِthe mighty عَلَىover الذَّلِيلِthe abased
Passion's rule in seizing it
is the rule of the mighty over the abased.
