The thin-forelocked mule has arrived, led alongside

by rain accompanying lightning, appearing as its cloud pours down.

Of noble stock, she takes after her maternal uncles, and hers is

the distinction of noble breeding from the nobler of the two kinds.

    يُرِيكَ غَائِبَها فِي الحُسْنِ حَاضِرُهُ

    Filling the girth and filling the eye, she is radiant;

her visible beauty shows you what is hidden in her.

The meadow bestowed on her, from its own qualities, a marking

green and fresh, even if its own fresh growth fades.

She is not the first gift of a mount with which you bought

my praise, nor, O generous one, is she the last.

How many a swimming steed preceded her! In my hand

lay its reins, while its hooves were upon al-Jawza.
