شُرَّابَها مَا سُمِّيَتْ بِعُقَارِ
She was slain for them, a wounded victim; had she made peace with
A drink was poisoned for them, though had it been left untainted
her drinkers, she would not have been called ʿuqār—wine, the maimer.
It would not have been called poison.

صَرْعى تُداسُ بِأَرْجُلِ العُصَّارِ
She recalled her ancient grievances, from when she lay
It recalled its ancient virtues when it became
stricken, trampled beneath the grape-pressers' feet.
A lifeless body trampled under the feet of the pressers.
لانَتْshe grew gentle لَهُمْwith them حَتَّىuntil انْتَشَواthey grew intoxicated فَتَمَكَّنَتْthen she gained mastery

مِنْهُمْ وَنَادَتْ فِيهِمُ بِالثَّارِ
She was gentle with them until they grew drunk; then she gained mastery
It pined for them until they were relaxed and off guard,
over them and cried out among them for vengeance.
Then it took hold of them and called out among them for vengeance,
وَأَمَاتَهُمْand killed them طَرَبُthe rapture of الأَغَانيthe songs مِيْتَةًa manner of death
وَأَمَاتَهُمْ طَرَبُ الأَغَاني مِيْتَةً

أَخَذُوا لَها الأَوْتَارَ بِالأَوْتَارِ
And the rapture of songs slew them—a death
And the rapture of the songs killed them,
in which they exacted vengeance for her with musical strings.
As they took away its strings string by string.
