قُمْrise ياO غُلامُboy اسْقِنيgive me to drink مُشَعشَعَةًsparkling, diluted wine
تَسِيرُflows فيin الكأسِthe cup بالتَباشيرِwith the first gleams
Rise, boy, give me sparkling, diluted wine to drink,
Arise, O youth, and pour me sparkling wine,
Flowing through the cup with the first bright gleams.
That moves within the cup in pearls;
تَجَرَّدَتْit has bared itself والزَّمانُwhile time يَحْجُبُهاveils it
كَظُلْمَةٍlike darkness أَطْبَقَتْclosed عَلىover نُورِlight
It has bared itself, while time veils it,
She has undressed, while time obscures her,
Like darkness closing over light.
Like darkness overwhelming light;
تُظَنُّit is imagined to be فيin كأْسِهاits cup إِذاwhen مُزِجَتْit is mixed
نجومَstars لَيْلٍof night تَهْويplunging لِتَغْويرِto sink out of sight
When mixed in its cup, it seems to be
In her cup, when blended, you would think
Stars of night plunging out of sight;
Were stars of night falling to seduce;

Or hailstones set turning in a circle
Or cooled pearls circled
Above a fire that burns unkindled;
Above a fire without blazing;

Or a pearl necklace whose knots have loosened
Or a necklace of pearls whose clasps
Upon carnelian, in a palace of crystal.
Are on ruby in a palace of crystal;
كَمhow often حَثَّurged شُربيmy drinking لِكَأْسِهاfrom its cup قَمَرٌa moon

بِقَدِّwith the figure غُصْنٍof a bough وخَصْرِand the waist زُنبورِof a wasp
How often a moon has urged me to drink a cup of this wine,
How often has the drinking of her cup pressed on the moon,
With a bough's figure and a wasp's waist;
With a willowy waist and a wasp's slenderness,
يَجْذِبُهُpulls him رِدْفُهُhis rump فَأَحْسِبُهُso I imagine him

His rump pulls him, so I imagine him
Her buttocks draw him; and I fancied
Trying to walk upon glass bottles.
He walks with a gait on crystals.
