حَسَدَتْناenvied us أَيَّامُناour days بِالتَّلاقيfor coming together
حَسَدَتْنا أَيَّامُنا بِالتَّلاقي
فَرَمَتْنَاso they struck us تَعَسُّفاًunjustly بِالفِراقِwith parting
فَرَمَتْنَا تَعَسُّفاً بِالفِراقِ
Our days envied us our union,
Our days envied us when we met
so unjustly struck us with parting.
So they arbitrarily cast us asunder
مَاnot أَرَدْناwe wished for الفِراقَparting لاmay not كانَit be مِنَّاfrom us
مَا أَرَدْنا الفِراقَ لا كانَ مِنَّا
أَشْمَتَmay … make … gloat اللَهُGod بِالفِراقِover parting التَّلاقيunion
أَشْمَتَ اللَهُ بِالفِراقِ التَّلاقي
We did not wish for parting—may it never be our doing.
We did not want to part, it was not our doing
May God make union gloat over parting.
God has brought relief through reunion after separation
