O you who drove my sweet sleep away from me,

What have I to do with you? You have prolonged my sleeplessness.

For what sin, then, or under what circumstance

Have you banished me, though you have dwelt in my heart?

And you turned away from me when love had already claimed

My soul, my heart, my inward parts, and my reins.

Your glances seized my life's blood, until

My heart became a captive with no one to ransom it.

No wonder if your eyes have slain a lovesick man,

For how many lions you have felled with them!

O you who possess all the beauties of humankind,

And beauty in her is a dweller within a nomad.

Be gentle with the one whose heart your eyes have captured,

And let the swords rest in their sheaths.

And generously show me tenderness with a kiss,

For in the mīm of your smiling mouth is healing for the thirsty.

My solace has died—may God prolong your life—

And my patience has indeed perished, while my sleeplessness lives on.

And among my wishes is that my lovesickness for you might last—

Oh, how welcome! Then I would see you among my sickbed visitors.

And I would let my eyes roam over your fresh bloom—

The bloom of your shimmering, blazing cheek.

And I say: Do whatever you wish, O my heart's desire.

I have nothing but you, even if I am denied my desire,

Save praise of the Chosen One: it is my mainstay.

And with it I shall meet God on the day of my return.
