ياO مَنْyou who إِذاwhenever رُمْتُI seek عَنْهُapart from him الصَّبْرَpatience يَمْنَعُنيholds me back
شَوْقٌlonging يُجيبُanswers وَدَمْعٌand tears لَيْسَare not يَمْتَنِعُrestrained
O you, whenever I seek patience in your absence, I am held back
O you whom when patience escapes me
By longing that answers, and tears that will not be restrained.
Yearning answers and a tear that does not refrain
هَبْنيsuppose that I أُخادِعُtry to deceive طَرْفيmy eye عَنْaway from تأَمُّلِهِgazing at him
فَكَيْفَso how أَخْدَعُI deceive قَلْباًa heart لَيْسَis not يَنْخَدِعُdeceived
Suppose I trick my eye into not gazing at him—
Grant me to deceive my eyelids from contemplating him
How, then, can I deceive a heart that will not be deceived?
For how can I fool a heart that will not be fooled
اخْضَعْsubmit إِذاwhen عَزَّis proud مَنْthe one whom تَهْوىyou love وَذِلَّand humble yourself لَهُbefore him
فَودُّfor the affection أَهْلِpeople of الهَوىlove أَبْقَىmore enduring إِذاwhen خَضَعُواthey submit
Submit when the one you love is proud, and humble yourself before him;
Submit when he whom you love becomes dear and humble yourself to him
For lovers’ affection lasts longer when they submit.
For the affection of the people of passion lasts when they submit
