ظالِميmy tormentor فيin كُلِّevery حَالِstate
عَاشِقٌenamored of هَجْرَforsaking وِصالِيunion with me
My tormentor, in every circumstance,
My oppressors in every state
Loves to forsake union with me.
A lover deprived of union
تائِهٌhaughty يَزْدادُhe grows تِيهاًhaughtiness
عِنْدَat ذُلِّيmy abasement فيin سُؤَالِيmy pleading
Haughty, he grows still haughtier
Wandering, increasingly lost
When I abase myself in pleading.
In my lowliness, in my questioning
أَيُّهاO you السَّائِلُthe one asking عَنِّيabout me
وَهْوَthough he يَدْرِيknows سُوءَwretchedness of حالِيmy state
O you who ask about me,
O questioner about me
Though he knows my wretched state:
While he knows my wretched state
سَوْفَwill أَسْلوُI cease to pine وَبَعيدٌyet far
بَيْنَbetween قَوْلِيmy words وَفِعالِيand my deeds
I shall cease to pine—yet wide is the gap
I will ask, though distant
Between my words and my deeds.
Between my words and deeds
