رَعىmay preserve اللَهُGod لَيْلاًa night ضَلَّstrayed عَنْهُaway from it صَبَاحُهُits dawn
وَطَيْفُكَand your phantom فيهِin it لاdoes not يُفارِقُleave مَضْجَعيmy bed
May God preserve a night whose dawn strayed away from it,
The night advanced while its morning abandoned it,
And your phantom within it never leaves my bed.
and your phantom does not leave my bed.
وَلَمْand not أَرَI saw مِثْليanyone like me غارَgrew jealous مِنْbecause of طُولِthe length of لَيْلِهِhis night
عَلَيْهِover him كأَنَّas though الليلَthe night يَعْشَقُهُloves him مَعيalongside me
And never have I seen one like me, jealous of the length of his night
I have not seen anyone as distressed by the long night as I,
Over him—as though the night loved him alongside me.
as if the night were in love with him, like me.
وَمازِلْتُand I kept أَبْكيweeping فيin دُجَاهُits darkness صَبَابَةًout of longing

And I kept weeping in its darkness out of longing,
I continued to weep the night through like a youth,
From love's anguish, until it turned white with the flood of my tears.
from passion, until my copious tears whitened.
