أَلِفَ السُّقْمُ جِسْمَهُ وَالحَنِينُ

أَلِفَ السُّقْمُ جِسْمَهُ وَالحَنِينُ

وَبَرَاهُ الهَوى فَلَيْسَ يَبِينُ

وَبَرَاهُ الهَوى فَلَيْسَ يَبِينُ

Illness and longing have grown familiar with his body.

And passion has wasted him away, so he is no longer visible.

قَدْ سَمِعنا أَنِينَهُ مِنْ قَرِيبٍ

قَدْ سَمِعنا أَنِينَهُ مِنْ قَرِيبٍ

فَاطْلُبوا الجِسْمَ حَيْثُ كَانَ الأَنِينُ

فَاطْلُبوا الجِسْمَ حَيْثُ كَانَ الأَنِينُ

We have heard his moaning close by;

So seek the body where the moaning was.

لَمْ يَعِشْ أَنَّهُ جَلِيدٌ وَلَكِنْ

لَمْ يَعِشْ أَنَّهُ جَلِيدٌ وَلَكِنْ

طَلَبَتْهُ فَلَمْ تَجِدْهُ المَنُونُ

طَلَبَتْهُ فَلَمْ تَجِدْهُ المَنُونُ

He has survived not because he is hardy, but because

Death sought him but could not find him.

لا تَراهُ العُيُونُ إِلا ظُنُوناً

لا تَراهُ العُيُونُ إِلا ظُنُوناً

وَهْوَ أَخْفى مِنْ أَنْ تَراهُ العُيُونُ

وَهْوَ أَخْفى مِنْ أَنْ تَراهُ العُيُونُ

Eyes see him only by conjecture,

And he is too hidden for eyes to see him.

فَهْوَ حَيٌّ لَمْ يَحْوِهِ طَرْفُ حَيٍّ

فَهْوَ حَيٌّ لَمْ يَحْوِهِ طَرْفُ حَيٍّ

وَهْوَ مَيْتٌ في جِسْمِهِ مَدْفُونُ

وَهْوَ مَيْتٌ في جِسْمِهِ مَدْفُونُ

So he is alive, yet no living person's gaze has encompassed him;

And he is dead, buried within his own body.
