أَسْتَوْدِعُI entrust اللَهَGod فيin بَغْدَادَBaghdad لِيof mine قَمَراًa moon
بِالكَرْخِin al-Karkh مِنْfrom فَلَكِthe celestial sphere of الأَزْرَارِthe buttons مَطْلَعُهُhis rising-place
I entrust to God a moon of mine in Baghdad;
In al-Karkh he rises from the sphere of buttons.
وَدَّعْتُهُI bade him farewell وَبِوُدِّيand I wished أَنْthat تُوَدِّعَنيwould bid me farewell
رُوحُthe spirit of الحَياةِlife وَأَنِّيand that I لاnot أُوَدِّعُهُbid him farewell
I bade him farewell, though I wished to be bidden farewell
By the spirit of life, and not to bid him farewell.
وَكَمْand how often تَشَبَّثَhe clung بِيto me يَوْمَon the day of الرَّحيلِdeparture ضُحَىًin the forenoon
وأَدمُعيand my tears مُستَهِلاتٌpouring down وَأَدمُعُهُand his tears
And how often he clung to me on the morning of departure,
While my tears poured down, and his tears too.
وَكَمand how often تَشَفَّعَhe pleaded فيfor أَنthat لاnot أُفارِقَهُI leave him
وَلِلضَّرُورَةِand necessity has حَالٌa condition لاnot تُشَفِّعُهُgrant his plea
And how often he pleaded that I should not leave him,
But necessity is such that it will not grant his plea.
