أَتانيcame to me زائِراًas a visitor مَنْthe one who كانَused to يُبديshow
لِيَto me الهَجْرَestrangement الطويلَlong وَلاand does not يَزورُvisit
He came to visit me—the one who had shown
He who used to shun me for so long
Me long estrangement and would not visit.
Came visiting, no more to stay away
فقالَthen said النَّاسُthe people لمَّاwhen أَبصَرُوهُthey saw him
لِيهْنِكَmay it gladden you زارَكَvisited you البَدْرُthe full moon المُنيرُradiant
Then the people said, when they saw him:
So when the people saw him, they would say:
“May it bring you joy! The radiant full moon has visited you.”
“For your happiness, the bright full moon came your way!”
فقلتُso I said لَهُمْto them ودمعُand tears العَيْنِof the eye يجريflow
عَلىon خَدِّيmy cheek لَهُit has دُرٌّpearls نَثيرُscattered
So I said to them, while tears from my eye flowed
But I said to them with tears flowing
Down my cheek, their pearls strewn loose:
Down my cheek “For him many a pearl I lay”
متىwhen أَرْعىI graze رِياضَthe gardens الحُسْنِof beauty منهُfrom him
وَعَيْنيand my eye قَدْalready تَضَمَّنَهاhas engulfed it غَديرُa pool
“When can I graze in his gardens of beauty,
When can I tend the garden of his beauty?
While a pool has engulfed my eye?
For my eye holds an ocean at bay
ولوand if نَصَبواthey set up رَحىa millstone بإِزاءِopposite دَمعيmy tears
لَكَانَتْit would have been مِنْfrom تَحَدُّرِهِits downward flow تدورُturning
And had they set a millstone opposite my tears,
And if a mill were established to face my tear
It would have turned from their downward flow.”
It would spin without stop from its pouring sway
