كأنَّas though الهِلالَthe crescent وَقَدْwhile already أَسْرَعَتْhastened
يَدُthe hand البَيْنِof parting فيin فَرْطِexcess إِنفادِهِdepleting it
As though the crescent, now swiftly
wasted utterly by the hand of parting,
وَحَفَّتْand gathered بِهِaround it طالِعاتُthe rising ones النُّجومِof the stars
عَلِيلٌa sick man لَقىًcast down بَينَamong عُوَّادِهِhis visitors
and ringed by the rising stars,
were a sick man, cast down among his visitors.
خَفِيٌّhidden عَنِfrom اللَّحْظِthe gaze عِنْدَupon العِيانِdirect sight
كَصَبٍّlike a lovesick lover نأىwent far away خَوْفَfor fear of حُسَّادِهِhis enviers
Hidden from the gaze even in plain sight,
like a lovesick lover gone far away for fear of his enviers.
كأَنَّas though السَّقامَsickness لَهُfor him عاشِقٌa lover
فَقَدْfor indeed سارَhas moved قُرْباًnearer بإِبعادِهِthrough his withdrawal
As though sickness were in love with him,
for it has drawn nearer as he withdraws.
