And your turning away delights me, though it is
I'm fond of your aloofness, though it's perilous,
surely death—yet how welcome is death through love!
Yet peril in love is sweet and glorious.

For, by God, I did not choose concealment out of aversion,
By God, I chose not to conceal my passion,
but for fear that broken faith might taint love.
But to avoid disloyalty tainting our union.
شَرِبْتُI drank حُمَيَّاheady wine الحُبِّof love صِرْفاًunmixed مُعَتَّقاًaged
فَشُرْبُso the drinking of الوَرىhumankind مَزْجٌa mixture وشُرْبيand my drinking لَهاof it صِرْفُpure
I drank love’s heady wine, unmixed and aged;
I drank love's wine unmixed and aged,
so others drink a mixture, while I drink it pure.
While the world drinks diluted and assuaged.
