وَذِيand one endowed with غُنُجٍcoquetry مَرَّpassed بِيby me مُسْرِعاًswiftly
يُحَيِّرُbewilders مِنْbecause of حُسْنِهِhis beauty العَالَمِيناthe world’s people
And one with coquettish charm hurried past me,
Bewildering all the world with his beauty.
لِصُدْغَيْهِfor his two sidelocks ظِلٌّa shadow عَلَىupon وَجْنَتَيْهِhis two cheeks
كَظِلِّlike the shadow of غُصُونٍbranches تَثَنَّيْنَswayed لِيناgently
His sidelocks cast a shadow upon his cheeks,
Like the shadow of branches swaying gently.
إِذاwhen اشْتَدَّgrew intense حَرُّthe heat of اشْتِياقِthe longing of القُلوبِthe hearts
أَقَالَتْgave a noonday rest بِهاin them أَنْفُسَthe souls of العَاشِقِيناthe lovers
When the heat of hearts’ longing grows fierce,
They grant lovers’ souls a noonday rest there.
