وليلةٍand a night فيamong عُدَدِprovisions الشبابyouth
نجومُهاits stars فيin صورةِthe likeness of الأَحبابِthe loved ones
And a night among the provisions of youth,
A night amidst the days of youth,
Its stars in the likeness of loved ones;
Its stars are in the image of loved ones,
لباسُهاits clothing غلائلُgauzy robes اجتنابavoidance
هلالُهاits crescent فيin خللِthe gaps of السحابِthe clouds
Its clothing, gauzy robes of avoidance;
Its dress, the locks of abstinence,
Its crescent, in the gaps between the clouds,
Its crescent in the gap of clouds,
كمذْهَبِlike the gilded form of النونِthe letter nūn منfrom الكتابِthe book
فيin لازَوَرْدِيٍّlapis-blue عَلَىupon محرابِa prayer niche
Like the gilded letter nūn from the book,
Like the splendor of Noon from the Book,
In lapis-blue upon a prayer niche,
In a saffron robe on the prayer niche,
أَوْor طرفِthe tip of السَّيفِthe sword منfrom القِرَابِthe sheath
طويتُهاI folded it away بالنشرِby unfolding للعِتابِfor reproach
Or a sword’s tip protruding from its sheath.
Or the edge of a sword from its sheath,
I folded it away by unfolding reproaches,
I have folded it in sending away for blame,
وحاجبُand the brow of الفجرthe dawn بلاwithout حِجَابِa veil
يَضْحكُlaughs والظلماءُwhile the darkness فيin انتحابِsobbing
And dawn’s brow, without a veil,
And the dawn's eyebrow without veil,
Laughs while the darkness sobs.
Laughs while the darkness is in dissolution,
أَماindeed وحقِّand by the right of حُرمْةthe sanctity of الآدابِgood manners
ورُبَّand many a إِبرازٍdisplay بلاwithout ارتقابِexpectation
Indeed, by the sanctity of good manners,
By the sanctity of manners!
And many a display without expectation,
And frequent display without heed,
لاnot قلتُI said إِنَّthat الودَّaffection باكتسابِby acquisition
ماso long as لمnot يكنْit is طبعاًa natural disposition منfrom الأَحبابِthe loved ones
I would never say that affection is earned,
Did I not say that affection is through gaining,
Unless it comes naturally from loved ones.
If it was not innate from loved ones?
