And a lovely maiden, swaying proudly in youth,
A coy beauty reveling in youth
her beauty free of fault,
Her beauty free of flaws

clothed in the charms of youthful dalliance.
Clad in the salt of wit
Her eyelids are tipsy without wine;
Her eyes full of dew without drinking

with her glances she captures the forest's lions.
She captivates lions of the forest with her glances
A cherished one who surpasses her masters,
A seductress nurturing her lovers

Knowing well how to play with minds
I shunned her as she ceased to shun me,
I shunned her for avoiding my reproach

فَأُذْهِبَتْso it was carried away بمذهبalong the course of الخطابِspeech
for my time is too short for my reproaches.
Since my resolve falls short of blaming her
So it was carried away along the course of speech,
So she turned away scowling

with gaze lowered by the reply.
Her gaze full of disapproval
It left me sitting tongue-tied, like al-Khattabi.
She made me sit confused like a fool

And that is a title on a book,
That being the mark of a letter
its contents devoid of learning,
Its inside blank of manners

As if it's a lock upon ruins
its key Abu Turab's penis.
Its key lost in dust

O you, singled out by a lying praiser,
O you who are uniquely wondrous without conceit
and my backbiter is truthful in his satire.
I have exceeded in satirizing and reproaching you

Your flatterer, if he flatters you for reward,
I would reward you if I could for forbearance
is like a bird sent into fog.
Like a bird sent into the fog

You have exceeded, in description, the bounds of prolixity,
You have exceeded the bounds of verbosity in description
O you whose ancestry is scant among ancestral honors,
Too few are your ancestries in counting

Like your obscure mention in the book
O you unmatched in conceit, yet inspiring no admiration!
O peerless in wonder without admiration

He went too far in lampooning you and backbiting me:
I have been excessive in satirizing and faulting you
he called you human without warrant.
Naming you a man without justification

Take it, dark-cloaked,
Below which lies the gloomy dress
strange in its novelty and its expression,
Strange in eloquence and grammar

harder-hitting than the blows of combat.
It has fallen from the positions of rhythm
It spends the night as a driving-song for riders and mounts.
Spending the night at the edge of the riding party and riders

Adorned with bags upon bags
and the Arhab she-camels from the open plains.

They sway in the reins of departure,
Crossing in the agony of parting
faster than reckoners' fingers,
Swifter than the fingers of counting

Since they journeyed away with the souls of the beloved,
Since they traveled with the souls of loved ones

I spent the night with my thumb upon my tail,
With my forefinger upon my molar
mourning a heart whose scars never fade,
I lament a heart ever lamenting

Until dawn emerged from its veil
laughing, while the darkness sobbed.
Laughing while darkness crept in
