  1. يا ساكني حلب العوا

    صم جادها صوب الغمامه

    O dwellers in Aleppo of al-Awasim,

    may the cloud's downpour drench her.

  2. أنا في مدينتكم غري

    ب لست من أهل الإقامه

    I am a stranger in your city,

    not one of the settled inhabitants.

  3. والخان يحدث للغري

    ب إذا أبن بن سآمه

    And the inn brings a stranger

  4. فقرضت من طول المقا

    م بها وأعوزت المدامه

    So I was worn down by the long stay

    there, and wine became scarce.

  5. وخرجت في بعض الليا

    لي قاصداً باب السلامه

    heading for Bab al-Salama.

  6. وشربت من بئر بها

    من يأتها ينقع أوامه

    And I drank from a well there;

    whoever comes to it quenches his burning thirst.

  7. ورتعت في فلواته

    وعلوت مرتقياً أكامه

    And I roamed at ease in its open wastes,

    and climbed, scaling its hillocks.

  8. فلمحت في بعض الوها

    د وقد قعدت سواد هامه

    Then, in one of the hollows, I glimpsed,

    as I sat there, the dark shape of a head.

  9. فسعيت أحسبها غرا

    باً أو حداة أو حمامه

    So I hurried over, thinking it a crow,

    or a kite, or a dove.

  10. وإذا بأسود كالفني

    ق يقل إيراً كالدعامه

    And there was a black man, like a prize camel-stallion,

    bearing a cock like a pillar.

  11. وإذا بشيخ تحته

    حسن الوسامة والقسامه

    And there was an old man beneath him,

    handsome and fair-featured.

  12. والشيخ يعصر تحته

    قد بل من عرق حزامه

    And the old man was being squeezed beneath him,

    his belt already soaked with sweat.

  13. فزجرت نايكه فقا

    ل له ألست ترى مقامه

    So I rebuked the man fucking him; then he said

    to him, 'Do you not see his standing?

  14. انهض فديتك علنا

    نقضي بنهضتنا ذمامه

    Get up, may I be your ransom; perhaps we

    can, by rising, pay him his due,

  15. ونعود بعد عزوبه

    عنا وتربحنا خصامه

    and return after his departure

    from us, and you spare us his wrangling.'

  16. فسطا عليه وقال نك

    لا كان ذاك ولا كرامه

    Then he pounced on him and said, 'Fuck!

    None of that, and no honor for him!

  17. هذا الرقيع بعينه

    لي في رقاعته علامه

    This very fool—

    I have proof of his foolishness.

  18. لولا فضول فيه لم

    يصرف إلى دبري اهتمامه

    Were he not a meddler, he would not

    turn his attention toward my anus.'

  19. وبكى وقال لي امض وي

    ك واسأل الله السلامه

    and ask God for safety.

  20. واشكره لما صار سر

    مك لا يريد له صمامه

  21. واعلم بأني كنت من

    أهل الرياسة والزعامه

  22. يومى إلي إذا عبر

    ت يقال ذا ابن أبي أسامه

  23. حتى ابتليت بمعبري

    فحصلت بين الناس شامه

    Until I was afflicted with my rear passage,

    and became a blemish among people.'

  24. فعجبت من تلك الفصا

    حة وهو يعفج والعرامه

    I marveled at such eloquence,

    while he was being fucked—and at his impudence:

  25. شيخ له سمة تخا

    طبني بألفاظ مقامه

    an old man whose bearing spoke

    to me in the language of a maqama.

  26. والأير يغرق في استه

    قد غاب في مفساه قامه

  27. فتضاحك الحبشي من

    ه وقال لا تسمع كلامه

    Then the Abyssinian laughed at him

    and said, 'Do not listen to his words.

  28. هذا وعيشك دأبة

    من قبل مبلغه احتلامه

    This, by your life, has been his habit

    since before he reached the age of wet dreams.

  29. أبدا يباري باسته

    بين الورى صوب الغماه

    Always, with his arse, he vies

    with the cloud's downpour among mankind.'

  30. واستله من دبره

    وكأنه عنق النعامه
