شفى الله نفسي من معشر
اضاعواthey abandoned قدامةQudamah يومon the day of النسارal-Nisar
اضاعوا قدامة يوم النسار
May God heal my soul with vengeance on a people
who abandoned Qudamah on the day of al-Nisar.
أضاعواthey abandoned فتىa young man غيرnot جثامةa laggard
أضاعوا فتى غير جثامة
طويلlong النجادthe sword-belt بعيدfar-reaching المغارthe raiding-ground
طويل النجاد بعيد المغار
They abandoned a young man who was no laggard,
long of sword-belt, far-ranging in his raids,
ينبيhe drives back الفوارسthe horsemen عنaway from رمحهhis spear
ينبي الفوارس عن رمحه
بطعنwith spear-thrusts كافواهlike the mouths of كعبshells المهارof shellfish
بطعن كافواه كعب المهار
who drove horsemen back from his spear
with thrusts gaping like the mouths of seashells.
وفرتand fled كلابKilab علىon وجههاits face
وفرت كلاب على وجهها
خلاexcept جعفرJa'far قبلbefore وجهthe beginning of النهارthe day
خلا جعفر قبل وجه النهار
And Kilab fled headlong—
save Ja'far—before the break of day.
