جَزَىmay He reward اللَّهُGod عَنَّاon our behalf جَعْفَرًاJa‘far حِينَwhen أَزْلَفَتْbrought forward

May God reward Ja‘far on our behalf, when it brought us forward—
May Allah reward Ja'far, when our sandals
our sandal among those who trod—and then slipped.
Nearly slipped from our feet as we climbed.
همُthey خلطوناthey mingled us بالنفوسwith their own selves وألجأواand gave refuge
إلىto حجراتchambers أدفأتgave warmth وأظلتand gave shade
They mingled us with their own selves and gave us shelter
They confused us with the masses and forced
in chambers that warmed and shaded us.
Us into heated, shaded rooms.
أَبَوْاthey refused أَنْto يَمَلُّونَاtire of us وَلَوْeven if أَنَّthat أَمَّنَاour mother

They refused to tire of us; even if our mother
They refused to bore us, though if our mother
faced what they face from us, she would have tired.
Met what we meet from them, she would be bored.
وقالواand they said هلمَّcome الدارَthe house حتىuntil تبينواyou see clearly
وتنجَليand clears away الغَمَاءُthe dark distress عمَّاfrom what تجلَّتِhas become clear
And they said, “Come to the house until you see clearly,
And they said, "Come, the house, so you may see clearly
and the dark distress lifts from whatever comes to light.”
And the clouds over what is seen may disperse."
ومنand from بعدماafter كناwe were لسلمىfor Salma وأهلهاand her people
قطيناًhousehold dependents وملتناand grew weary of us البلادُthe lands وملتِand she grew weary
And after we had been, for Salma and her people,
After we were for Salma and her people
household dependents—and the lands wearied of us, and she too—
Strangers, the lands filled us and we filled them.

we shall repay with kindness the favors bestowed,
We will repay with kind deeds of hands that have passed
for which, among us, God’s greatness was proclaimed and voices raised.
For us exalted and made worthy.
