Between Waqṭ and Ḍalfaʿ I recognized Laylā's

    dwellings—deserted summer and spring camps.

From Wāsiṭ to the bend, nothing was visible to us

there but stalks of uprooted thumām grass,

and blackened hearthstones, fire-scorched for a year, as though

    they had been coated with pitch or gleaming tar;

and waterskins, worn thin at the folds, as though they were

dead foxes whose skins had not been stripped away.

The heart would have nothing but love for her, a Ḥārithī woman,

who lives beside my enemies, while her enemies are with me.

As a piebald one appeared, guarding her foal,

white-flecked at the tail, with mottled coloring.

White-flecked at the tail, she was clad, though dark,

in a skirt of brocade and patterned fine cloth.

My camels refused the water of the troughs and took to

the fresh shoots of autumn rain and the bends of a watering place.
