مَغانِيَ دارٍ مِن سُعادَ وَمَنزِلِ
At Qurra, after a full year had passed, I visited
I passed by Qurra in the midst of ample dwellings,
the dwelling-sites of Su'ad and her abode.
The songs of an abode of joy and home.

You see most of what the night rains left as though it were,
You see most of what the horsemen left as if it were
after the sand-driving winds, the mark of a notched sword.
Far from the horse trails, the mark of a dangling sword.

Dwellings of Su'da, when Su'ad was a gazelle fawn,
It is the abode of Su’da when Su’ad is a helper,
among the pale gazelles, slim of belly, not fleshy.
Made of hides, not coarse hair-tents.

عَقيلَةُ جَوٍّ عازِبٍ لَم يُحلَّلِ
Pure white, suffused with a tinge of yellow,
The white sheep were dyed yellow,
the choicest of a remote valley no one had settled.
An unmarried maiden of the air not made lawful.

Combing pins disappear in her lofty braids,
The rings in her braids wander
whether loosened or left like this, not let down.
When she lets them down or keeps them up.

As though the earrings and chains were jingling
It was as though the trailing trains and lower parts
at the ear-roots of a stout-horned doe with a fawn.
Rustled over the bent poles of the spindle.

The summer months harbored between staying
a valley gentle to her and smooth, easy sands.
With the valley and sands made easy for them.

In a pebbly vale you find her just atop her bed,
With sand hills wrapping their carpet bedding
sluggish at forenoon, not yet girdled out of her loose house-dress.
The heaviness of the forenoon, unable to speak of favor.

Doves sing above her at every sunrise,
The doves sing above it every dawn
like drunkards singing in a shaded bower.
The songs of the intoxicated in a shaded shelter.

When she waters with a bucket whose bottom
its rope short, its bottom needing no long cord.
Is short of being deep or hollow.

Adorning the eye’s desire among her bosom
and the hollows of her throat is adorned with sections of spaced onyx,
And folds, the joints of a hemmed cloak.

With a fan whose wind is not concealed.

And a tent that travels with dye as though it were
a long growth of squill nourished by the torrent.
A pole the torrent made from the trunks of palm trees.

Its sides shelter spinsters when
whether she lets it loose or leaves it thus, unloosened.
She sends it forth or so unfurled.

If she does not clean her teeth with an arak twig,
When it does not avail with a tent pole
an ishal twig is selected, and she brushes with it.
She seeks benefit from an acacia pole.

When she wearies of the sun's scorching, she is sheltered
When weary of the sun’s pane it shelters her
by a gazelle's covert, like the shade of a curtained howdah.
Like the shade of a covered howdah.

Sons of Ja'far, do not deny the good we have done,
Clan of Ja’far, do not reject our good efforts
and praise us with fair words in every gathering.
And speak well in every gathering.

Do not deny our valor in calamities,
And do not reject, in misfortunes, our affliction
when, amid them, the enemy bears down on you with his breast.
When an enemy touches you with harm.

For we defended your women on the day of Hirs,
We—when Amer had called us, not avoiding—
the morning 'Amir called us, sparing no effort.
Protected your women the day of Hirrs.

He raised the cry, “O al-Julayha'!” after
He called a call, “O people of Julayha”, after
he saw the broad mass of a swarming dark host that had felled the company.
Seeing the shame of Dahm strewn about cut to pieces.

He said, “Mount! You are defenders against such a crisis.”
Then he said, “You who protect the likes of them, ride!”
We flew to a kept-in string of horses, not grown bulky,
So we hastened to an unfinished destination.

long-tailed, pampered, and dark-coated,
Long of tails, bred freely, in clothes
clad in ample covering and a close-joined garment.
Of dye and a joined garment.

They came bearing the morning's riders, grim-faced,
They came with the horsemen of the dawn, frowning
swift to battle together, not unarmed.
Hastening to the fray together, not held back.

Their foremost were harried, their troop driven after them
Their first dashed, overtaking their horses,
by horsemen of ours with carefully chosen spears.
While horsemen from us, with the spears, perforated.

Our champion defended them; their foes were driven off
Our defenders protected and warded them off
by bands of ours in battle that never faltered.
Brave ones from us in the melee, unadorned.

We brought back the captive women of Nufayl and Ja'far,
We returned the captives from Nufayl and Ja’far
pregnant, some lightly burdened, others heavy.
While they were pregnant, some apparent, some hidden.

And many a fleeing woman, with no shield to shelter her,
And a she-camel fleeing, not avoiding with a camel litter,
returned to a saddleless camel lying thrown down.
A she-camel whose strap a torrent had torn.

I said to her, when I saw what had befallen her
So I said to her when I saw the harm upon her,
of evil, “Do not panic; look closely.
“Do not make light of it, consider!”

“If my people have not treated you well,
asking others will ease your mind—so ask.”
Then asking people will cure you, so ask.”

And many a man hemmed in beneath the spearheads I protected,
A disheveled man under the highlands, I protected him
broadcasting his appeal, crying out for help to all.
A man in turban with a plea, abased.

I lifted the anguish from him until it seemed
So I relieved his troubles until it was as though
he had taken refuge from battle within a fortress.
He had taken refuge from the fray to the refuge of a fortress.

His life had been on the brink of one of two fates,
Brandishing with its blade, it drives away the dust as though
barely beyond the raised spear-points, between capture and death.
It were the pouring from a waterskin of Sihab, hurried.

With a kicking mare that scatters dust, as though she were
When the swordsman looks at it, he dodges
a hurried outpouring of red liquid from two small leather skins.
Bowing with his hands, far from slashes.

When the woman devoted to him looked upon him, she wailed,
However much we mixed our blood with yours
slapping her face with both palms just after her lament.
And dyed our spears from cleavage and separation.

And with a fighter and prisoner bound.

Unkempt, his misery made public, deprived of provision,
and how many a full-breasted maiden and fettered captive!
Of those whom fate left behind, torn.

And we said to him, “Your coming has been long, so alight.”

came to us by night, and we did not turn him away.
We were hospitable but did not oblige him with our food,
We said to him, “Your wandering has been long; alight.”
So he went disputing with every single-headed one.
هَنَأناwe fed him فَلَمand we did not نَمنُنhold as a favor عَلَيهِover him طَعامَناour food

فَراحَ يُباري كُلَّ رَأسٍ مُرَجَّلِ
We fed him, without holding our food over him as a favor;
Then the affair settled down after having raged,
he went off matching every well-combed head.
And were it not for our efforts, it would not have settled.
فَأَبَّلَthen he acquired camels وَاِستَرخَىand grew easier بِهِfor him الشَأنُhis affairs بَعدَماafter

He became a camel-owner, and his affairs eased, after
That is so, and we did not deprive Tufayl ibn Malik
his herd had perished; without our efforts he would have had no camels.
And we do good whenever asked.
فَذاكَso that was it وَلَمand we did not نَحرَمdeprive طُفَيلَTufayl بنَson of مالِكٍMalik

So it was; nor did we deny Tufayl son of Malik,
For us is a fortress that threw down all fortresses
and whenever asked to do good, we did it.
Lying idle compared to it, every fortress.

We have a stronghold surpassing all strongholds,
beside which every stronghold is seen as lowly.
