Sulayma wished that I would dwell in her land.
Sulayma wished that I would settle in her land
Sulayma wished that I would dwell in her land, but how can I—woe to her—grant what Salma wished?
Yet how can Salma—alas for her!—have what she wished?
And I, for Sulayma and her love, wished what she wished
Oh, if only I knew whether I shall visit Sajir again, when it has been watered by morning rains and drunk its fill.
أَلاah! لَيتَif only شِعريmy knowledge هَلwhether أَزورَنَّI shall indeed visit ساجِراًSajir
أَلا لَيتَ شِعري هَل أَزورَنَّ ساجِراً

وَقَد رَوِيَت ماءَ الغَوادي وَعَلَّتِ
Ah, if only I knew: shall I indeed visit Sajir,
Oh would that I knew, shall I visit while fleeing
O Sons of Asad, is there any mercy among you, to forgive even if my sandal had slipped?
when it has drunk its fill of the morning rains and drunk again?
After drinking the water of Al-Ghwad and climbing its heights?
بَنيsons of أَسدِAsad هَلis there? فيكُمamong you مِنany هَوادَةٍleniency
بَني أَسدِ هَل فيكُم مِن هَوادَةٍ
فَتَعفواso you might pardon لَوif إِنindeed كانَتhad بيَwith me النَعلُthe sandal زَلَّتِslipped
فَتَعفوا لَو إِن كانَت بيَ النَعلُ زَلَّتِ
Sons of Asad, is there any leniency among you,
O Bani Asad, is there any affection in you
so that you might pardon me, if my sandal has indeed slipped?
That you may pardon, if my sandal strap loosened?
