Lo, Layla visited by night, while my leg lay captive,
To a dark, heavy fetter fastened upon me.
فَماfor … is not البَينُparting ياO سَلمىSalma بِأَنin that تَشحَطَgrows distant النَوىthe distance
وَلَكِنَّbut indeed بَيناًa parting ماwhat يُريدُintends عَقيلُAqil

فَإِنso if أَنجُI escape مِنهاfrom it أَنجُI escape مَنfrom ذيpossessed of عَظيمَةٍgreat severity

So if I escape it, I escape a grievous ordeal;
And if the other fate comes, then that is a path.

And I was never one to lose my way, nor fearful of night travel,
But he followed Hujr without a guide.
