أَلاAh! عَتَبَتshe found fault عَلَيَّwith me فَصارَمَتنيso she broke with me
وَأَعجَبَهاand pleased her ذَووthose with اللِّمَمِlocks of hair الطِوالِlong
Ah, she reproached me and broke with me.
Alas! She reproached me and turned away,
And she admired those with long locks.
And the evildoers with their long spears pleased her.
فَإِنّيfor indeed I ياO اِبنَةَdaughter of الأَقوامِthe clans أُربيI excel
عَلىbeyond فِعلِthe deed of الوَضيِّthe handsome man مِنَamong الرِجالِmen
For I, O daughter of the clans, surpass
O daughter of the clans! I was raised
the deeds of the handsome man among men.
To act nobly among men.
فَلاso do not تَصِليattach yourself بِصُعلوكٍto a pauper نَؤومٍmuch given to sleep
إِذاwhen أَمسىhe reaches evening يُعَدُّhe is counted مِنَamong العيَالِthe dependents
So do not attach yourself to a pauper who sleeps too much,
So do not pray with a miserable coward
who, when evening comes, is counted among the dependents.
When night comes and he is counted among the dependents.
وَلَكِنbut rather كُلُّany صُعلوكٍpauper ضَروبٍwho strikes repeatedly
بِنَصلِwith the blade of السَيفِthe sword هاماتِthe heads of الرِجالِmen
But rather to any pauper who strikes repeatedly
Rather, every valiant hero
men's heads with the blade of the sword.
With the blades of swords and the resolve of men.
أَشابَhas made gray الرَأسَthe head أَنّيthat I كُلَّevery يَومٍday
أَرىI see ليof mine خَالَةًa maternal aunt وَسطَamong الرِجالِthe men
What has made my head gray is that every day
My hair has turned white each day
I see a maternal aunt of mine among the men.
As I see for myself an aunt amidst the men,
يَشُقُّit is painful عَلَيَّfor me أَنthat يَلقَينَthey suffer ضَيماًinjustice
وَيَعجِزُand falls short عَنof تَخَلُّصِهِنَّtheir deliverance ماليmy wealth
It pains me that they suffer injustice,
It is hard for me that she should suffer harm
and my wealth cannot secure their deliverance.
While my wealth cannot save her from it.
