أَلا مَن مُبلِغٌ خاقانَ عَنّي

تَأَمَّل حينَ يَضرِبُكَ الشِتاءُ

O messenger to the Khan, hear me:

When the winter strikes you, take note

فَتَجعَل في جَنابِكَ مِن صَغيرٍ

وَمِن شَيخٍ أَضَرَّ بِهِ الفَناءُ

Of every small child and aged elder

Whose frailty the end brings close about.

فِراخُ دَجاجَةٍ يَتبَعنَ ديكاً

يَلُذنَ بِهِ إِذا حَمِسَ الوَغاءُ

See a hen’s chicks trail their rooster,

Taking warmth when bitter blows the gale.
