Asmāʾ meets the riding camels one evening,
asking about the resentment of the wandering-eyed women.
وَماذاand what عَلَيهاto her إِنif قَلوصٌa young she-camel تَمَرَّغَتrolled about
بِعِكمَينِwith two packs إِذwhen أَلقَتهُماshe cast them both بِالصَحاصِحِonto the open plains
And what harm is it to her if a young she-camel rolled about
with two packs, when she cast them both onto the open plains?
فَإِنَّكِfor indeed you لَوif أُنكِحتِyou were married off دارَتturned بِكِwith you الرَحىthe millstone
وَأَلقَيتِand you laid down رَحليmy saddle سَمحَةًcompliant غَيرَnot طامِحِwandering-eyed
For had you been given in marriage, the millstone would have turned with you,
and you would have laid down my saddle, compliant, not wandering-eyed.
وَلَمand not أَكُI was مِثلَlike الكاهِلِيِّthe Kāhilī وَعِرسِهِand his wife
سَقَتهُshe made him drink عَلىin لوحٍthirst دِماءَblood الذَرارِحِthe blister beetles
Nor would I have been like the Kāhilī and his wife:
she gave him, in his thirst, the blood of blister beetles to drink,
وَقالَتand she said شَرابٌa drink بارِدٌcool قَدalready جَدَحتُهُI stirred it
وَلَمand not يَدرِhe knew ماwhat خاضَتshe stirred لَهُfor him بِالمَجادِحِwith the stirring sticks
and said, "A cool drink—I have already stirred it."
And he did not know what she had stirred for him with the stirring sticks.
أَأَسماءُO Asmāʾ إِنّيindeed I قَدalready أَتانيcame to me مُخَبِّرٌa news-bearer
بِضَيقَةَat Ḍayqah يَنشوhe sniffs out مَنطِقاًtalk غَيرَnot صالِحِproper
O Asmāʾ, a news-bearer has indeed come to me
at Ḍayqah, sniffing out unseemly talk.
بَعَجتُI laid open إِلَيهِto him البَطنَthe belly ثُمَّthen اِنتَصَحتُهُI trusted him as an adviser
وَماand not كُلُّevery مَنone who يُلقىis imparted إِلَيهِto him بِصالِحِtrustworthy
I laid my belly open to him, then trusted him as an adviser;
and not everyone in whom one confides is trustworthy.
وَإِنّيand indeed I لَمِنsurely of قَومٍa people عَلىdespite أَنthe fact that ذَمَمتِهِمyou reviled them
إِذاwhen أَولَمواthey give a feast لَمnot يولِمواthey give a feast بِالأَنافِحِwith rennet-stomachs
And I am indeed of a people, though you have reviled them,
who, when they give a feast, do not serve rennet-stomachs.
وَإِنَّكِand indeed you مِنof قَومٍa people تَحِنُّyearn نِساؤُهُمtheir women
إِلىtoward الجانِبِthe side الأَقصىthe farthest حَنينَthe yearning المَنائِحِthe animals lent for milking
And you are indeed of a people whose women yearn
toward the farthest side, with the yearning of animals lent out for milking.
