Will the eye give a glimpse of its beloved,

or will the heart find rest from its pounding?

And do the nights have a kindly turn after estrangement,

returning to distract a watching eye from its tears?

And God's were days that faded, just as faded

the tresses of the swaying, tender ʿarār.

I yearn for the hills' blossoms in its broad flats,

and thirst for al-Liwā's fragrance in its gusts.

In that protected pasture, its breeze is ailing at dawn,

while its water is sound at dusk within its well.

I cherished its shade for my heart in its midday heat,

when it grew dark, or its sunlight amid its frost.

I remember that gazelle at the time I visited him:

he cared for me and paid no heed to his watcher's eyes.

He gave my mouth command of the vessel of his sweet saliva,

and brought my steed near the vessel of his milk.

It is longing, guided to a young man's mortal spot,

when it promises no heart a meeting with its beloved.

You taunt me for my face's discoloration, yet

its bloom lies buried in its pallor.

How often we have enjoyed misery in its bitterness,

and suffered from the sweetness of bliss.

Were it not for calamities death still has in store,

I would forgive this age its past offenses.

And I, knowing time and its treachery,

pass the night with no thought for its calamities.

I wake without deeming its great events great

within my heart, nor marveling at its wonders.

A young man is troubled by the thought of gray hair, yet sometimes

he meets life's end before his hair turns gray.

What follows makes him forget life's beginning,

and its coming reveals to us its departure.

How long shall I cleave the night from every trackless waste,

and watch the star's rising until its setting?

I inscribe each land with the tips of lances,

and fill the waste's cloaks with its scars.

Whenever a noble camel collapsed, I would leave it

captive to a painful hobble wrought by its weariness,

hoping for honor I might gain, and a station

that would add to the shrouds of my enemy's sorrows.

Many a grim ordeal from the nights' army I have met

with a heart whose resolve against it was far-reaching, yet near at hand.

I set my face before it, not like a helpless man

protected from the heat of thrusts by one he uses as a shield.

And horses as slender as lances, bearing lances

on every neck, forming a knot of its flowing mane.

I set upon them every lancer who thrusts into a troop,

as a water-drawer plunges his bucket at his well's two sides.

He fulfills his desire for glory who rides the lances

and makes bright blades lap blood as it streams.

In many a seated stance of mine, by its might I have raised

the lance, swaying at its joints, to thrust.

    وَمَن رَكِبَ اللَيثَ اِعتَلى عَن نَجيبِهِ

    When I rode into terror, I accepted nothing less;

whoever rides a lion has risen above his noble mount.

Lean steeds bring home to us the flock of glory,

racing at full stretch, and hands wielding the stoutest lance-wood.

And a radiant man from the heights of Maʿadd, whose fingers

rival a blade with a lush, well-watered edge.

Swifter toward the day of battle than his spearpoint,

and sharper upon foes' heads than his blade.

Is the sword anything but a blade drawn from his glances,

or the full moon anything but what rises from his robe's openings?

When asked, bounty pours down from his fingers

as a sand ridge's skirts pour down from its dune.

A generous man: when his keen blade has torn through the camel herd,

he lavishes gifts of his sleek horses after his aged she-camels.

He travels ahead of the star at its rising,

and swoops ahead of the star at its setting.

I was content with him at the outset of a day whose dust

lay upon its sun, bare above its broad plains.

He went on holding opponents in check with thrusts to their throats,

while the lances' raven persisted in its cawing.

I am the son of God's Prophet and the son of his legatee:

a pride that rises above any peer or equal.

The terror of calamity learned courtesy from me, after

fortune's rude side disclosed its courteous side to me.

By God, I shall not face time in humiliation,

even if it plants its sharpest edges in my two temples.

I am content: to me, every king's descent

from honor and eminence is the same as his ascent.

My only regret is for what I unveiled

to the ears of one whose gifts are scant and dried up.

When he sees me, his eye breaks off its glances,

and his lowered gaze announces his scowl to me.

Whoever's cheerful welcome wins no share of my praise,

I make varieties of blame the least of his portion.

Were my keen sword at hand, I would not revile him,

and bloodstains on his robe's openings would replace reproach.

Indeed, both watching eyes suffer in vain

when they hope for rain from a deceptive lightning flash.

I am faulted for my poetry, yet what I utter

sets a faultfinder's flanks trembling at his own disgrace.

Every young man looks toward another's faults

quickly, while his eye is blind to his own.

My composing poems is only a means

to a hope whose mount the time has come to lead.

And if God grants my wish,

I pledge Him to abandon poetry and its sin.

Can speech be my disgrace, when by its merit I secured

my pride, and fortified high honor with its varied forms?

I shall leave this age to bellow its bellowing,

and its bared fangs to gnash under my wrath.

I shall set my keen sword before my face as a shield,

so that my face's water, in my keeping, is safe from drying up.
