Why do I bid farewell each day to one departing?

If only I could hope for a reunion after parting!

And I go my way, remembering his companionship more keenly than ever,

As though I had entrusted him with my very entrails.

My hand is empty of him, while bearing him have returned

The hands of calamities and misfortunes, full.

My eye complains of a speck, and its complaint grows,

Until one speck within it becomes many specks.

A choking grief from time's blows—were it cast upon

This water, it would make the water choke with pain.

My closest loved ones, how often through you I suffer

A gnawing illness, yet I do not treat the illness.

Death revived your brotherhood; as for others,

I tested them, and was bereaved of them while they lived.

If my body has not been stricken, I have nonetheless

Divided it and buried it, limb by limb.
