مَنwho ليfor me بِرَعبَلَةٍwith a large she-camel مِنَamong البُزلِthe mature camels
تَرميshe flings إِلَيكَtoward you مَعاقِدَfastenings الرَحلِthe saddle
Who will find me a large she-camel among the mature camels,
Who will lend me a she-camel from Buzaal,
That flings the saddle's fastenings toward you,
That casts to you the ropes of travel,
عَجلىhurrying الرَواحِevening departure كَأَنَّماas though لَمَحَتshe glimpsed
فيكُمin you all غَديرَpool الجودِgenerosity مِنfrom قَبليbefore me
Hurrying on her evening journey, as though she had glimpsed
Swift of pace, as though she glimpsed
The pool of generosity in you before I did?
In you the meadow of generosity before my arrival,
نَغَّرتُهاI urged her on وَالبَدرُand the full moon مُطَّلِعٌrising
حَتّىuntil اِستَجابَit responded لِقائِدِto the leader الأُفلِthe setting stars
I urged her on while the full moon was rising,
I coaxed her while the full moon was rising
Until it answered the leader of the setting stars.
Until the leader of stars responded to the coaxing,
كَتَبَتshe wrote سُطوراًlines مِنfrom مَناسِمِهاher hoof-pads
فَوقَover الأَباطِحِthe gravelly streambeds وَالسُرىand night travel يُمليdictates
She wrote lines with her hoof-pads
She wrote lines with her markings
Over the gravelly streambeds, while night travel dictated.
Above the sand dunes and plains she dictated,
إِنّيindeed I بِهاupon her فيin السَيرِمُقتَرِحٌtravel, improvising
عَجِلاًhurriedly عَلىupon الإِقتابِthe camel saddles وَالجُدلِand the plaited cords
Upon her, I improvise as I journey,
With her I propose travel by night
Hurriedly, atop saddles and plaited cords.
Hastening despite fatigue and effort,
إِنَّindeed الَّذيthe one who وَخَدَتshe strode swiftly إِلَيهِtoward him فَتىًa young man
يَبراhe is free إِلىtoward أَمَليmy hope مِنَfrom البُخلِstinginess
Indeed, the one to whom she sped is a young man
The one I approached as a young man
Who meets my hope, free of stinginess.
Will be generous to my hopes, free of stinginess,
لاnot تَملِكُcan keep العَرَصاتُthe courtyards قَعدَتَهُhis sitting still
وَإِنِand if اِستَقَرَّhe settles فَفيthen on ذُرىthe heights الإِبلِthe camels
The courtyards cannot keep him seated,
Pasturages cannot restrain his abode
And if he settles, it is atop the camels.
Though he stays among the trails of camels,
لَمnot يُستَمَلhas been swayed بِالذُلِّby humiliation جانِبُهُhis disposition
مُذsince شَدَّhe clenched قَبضَتَهُhis grip عَلىupon النَصلِthe blade
His spirit has never been swayed by humiliation,
His side was not tempted by dishonor
Since he clenched his grip upon the blade.
Since he clenched his hand on the sword hilt,
تُنبيكَtells you نَفحَتُهُhis fragrance إِذاwhen فَغَمَتit fills the nostrils
عَنof طيبِthe goodness مَغرِسِthe planting-ground ذَلِكَthat الأَصلِroot
His fragrance tells you, when it fills the nostrils,
His breath reminds you, when troubles press heavily,
Of the goodness of the soil where that root was planted.
Of the sweet fragrance of the root of that lineage,
وَلَأَنتَand surely you مِثلُlike السَيفِthe sword فيamong مُضَرٍMudar
عاذَتshe sought refuge بِقائِمِهِat its hilt مِنَfrom الذُلِّhumiliation
And surely you are like a sword among Mudar,
You are like the sword in Muḍar
Who sought refuge at its hilt from humiliation.
Which people at war sought refuge in from disgrace,
وَإِذاand when هَتَفتَyou call out بِهِمto them لِنائِبَةٍfor a calamity
جَذَبواthey hasten وَراءَكَbehind you بِالقَناwith spears الذُبلِslender
And when you call to them in a calamity,
When you call them at a time of distress
They hasten behind you with slender spears.
They pull behind you with the frayed rope,
لاnot يُسلِمونَthey abandon مَنِwhoever اِتَّقىshielded himself بِهِمُwith them
قَرعَthe blows القَناthe spears وَمَواقِعَand the impacts النَبلِthe arrows
They do not abandon one who shelters behind them
They do not spare whoever sought protection against them
From spear-blows and the strikes of arrows.
The clanging of the sword and the flight of arrows,
عاميmy year وَعامُand the year المَحلِdrought فيin بَلَدٍone land
فَاِسحَبso draw إِلَيَّtoward me ذُؤابَةَthe forelock الوَبلِthe downpour
My year and the year of drought are in one land;
My tribesmen and the tribes in a country
So draw the downpour's forelock toward me.
So pull to me the forelock of the ostrich,
وَاِحصُدand twist tightly قُوايَmy strands فَإِنَّنيfor indeed I أَبَداًalways
بَينَamid القَرائِنِadversities مارِجُloosely twisted الحَبلِthe cord
And twist my strands tight, for I am always
And reap my strength, for I am ever
A loosely twisted cord amid adversities.
A wanderer, roaming the lands.
