What have the talebearers patched together and fabricated against me?

Tell me—for you are either envious or concerned.

Each day, the back of my house is the setting-place

of their talk, and the brow of your house its rising-place.

And how long shall my wood remain in their hands,

cast down, ceaselessly gnawed and burned?

How many times must purified gold be smelted,

when its substance already shines forth and its luster is clear?

    وَيَصِلُّ عِرضُهُمُ الذَليلُ فَيُبصَقُ

    My honor tastes sweet to them, so they gulp it down;

and their abject honor turns foul and is spat out.

They shook their faults onto me, though they merely

found a sound patch in the hide, then tore it apart.

Who can find me one who, if his friend's flaw appears,

hides it from his hater—or one who is truthful?

And if the prudent man flings his friend's secret abroad

deliberately, then the fool is worthier of affection.

Whoever backbites men and means to

test friends: the true friend is he who bows his head.

And when mouths glitter with an insult,

he cannot tell whether a mouth or a gleam is flashing.

Obscenity gains no hold upon his hearing,

and abusive speech slips off him and slides away.

Time has dealt unjustly: no generous man is to be hoped for

in calamities, nor a friend who shows compassion.

And it has tyrannized over me, so every spacious place is narrow

if I rest within it, and every rope strangles.

O you who urge me to resolve, unprepared as I am,

while day is piebald with the dust cloud's night:

leave me, for time shatters my resolve

and cuts away at my hope, to which I cling.

Death gallops through the reaches of our age,

as though the turns of calamity were clearing its way.
