We find fault, but are not faulted.

And we strike at you, but are not struck.

The Prophet's family, those in whose

    laps the Book was turned.

For them were fashioned dusky spear-shafts,

bright swords, and purebred Arabian horses.

So hold fast to your modesty, for

the days are only gain or plunder.

For one who savors death's draught, no

    drink is ever clear.

    And seek out where generosity

is abundant and noble lineage pure.

    Where, for the hopeful, reward

is bounty, and for the offender, punishment.

A people who, when Time presses

their possessions, grow generous and good.

And when they call, while the horses are

    fleeing, they rally or answer.

    O sons of ʿAdī, only

with your horses did the ravines flow.

And you gained honor through spear-thrusts, while the world

was blazing fire or striking blows.

    You were nothing but seas

    where wolves lapped together.

And you struck with bright swords, until

youth was lost among the locks.

And today the swords are drawn,

and on this day necks slip away.

    The blade-edges concealed your blood,

    as dye conceals gray hair.

So contend for the gray streaks of darkness,

for behind it are angry lions.

    And learn that morning

is a mighty lion, and night a thicket.

No peace until they rest at ease,

the riding camels upon their padded feet.

    And the sun's face returns

with neither dust upon it nor mist.

Until the sheaths cling to the blades,

    and the broad, smooth ones;

and the tent-ropes are stretched out,

and the domed tents conceal the people.

And the coats of mail are overlaid

    with clothing-bags fastened atop them.

And you see the hills and meadows,

from whose embroidered mantles clouds are unfurled.

What had been silvered by the sprinkling

    of dew, the showers gilded.

    The stars of night once

were concealed by the pall of dust.

Now there stands revealed in the sky

the full moon, and the veil is lifted.

And to their nests rose the eagles,

    while the eagle-banner was lowered.

    Return to that pool,

    for rain-clouds seldom betray.

And make the most of those dwellings,

    which are safe and spacious.

And recover the herds of the pastures,

while they are male camel-calves among you.

As though the days of love

among you were drunken or merry,

    girdled with jewels,

    and perfume in their necklaces.

    Indeed, despite my gentle nature,

I am neither faulted nor wronged.

Never, on any day, was tied about me

a girdle of abasement or greed.

Who will grant me a radiant-browed companion,

over whom no blemish gains sway?

He never fought the days unless

    victory was mine and his.

And every utterance has a listener,

    and every summons an answer.

    Alas, I seek what prolongs

    both distance and approach.

Companions are few; but if you gain

    good fortune, companions abound.

Who will grant me one generous when

    the people's milk-skins run empty?

Fierce in his neighbor's defense: no

barrier can fold away his resolve.

He finds the wasteland a pleasant dwelling,

even if the journey home is distant.

The edges of his tent grow thin

    as the mirage buffets them.

    Nothing bears his camp aloft

    but the summits and highlands.

In his hands the keen swords flutter,

    or dice flow through them.

    Joyful, he catches the breeze

    when the garments fall away.

To him are ascribed wormwood and

    buttercups, and mangy camels.

And his radiant brow, behind the veil

of his night, seems a shooting star.

Who will grant me him, O Time, when the days

    are scowling and angry?

    A true friend is stout-hearted

when a calamity or challenge grows grave.

while war rings with the clash of spears.

Many a brother—I was denied affection

from him, though close kinship binds us.

I vied with him for the nursing breast,

yet the drink is not sweet to us.

O Saʿd, the greatest affliction is

one whom reproach does not alarm.

    He wrongs his neighbors

    until abuse punishes him.

It is enough for me, from the days, that

I live on and my quest brings me joy.
