They left my tears unfettered and abandoned
They left my tears flowing freely and departed,
My heart, held captive to the sickness of love.
Leaving my heart imprisoned by lovesickness.
طِلاعُthose who fill الحَشىthe heart's depths لَمnot يَترُكواthey left فيهِin it فَضلَةًspare room
تَضُمُّholds جَوىًburning heartache مِنfrom بَعدِهِمafter them وَرَسيساand lingering love
Those who fill my heart left no room within it
They did not leave in my breast a single shred
To harbor burning heartache and lingering love after their departure.
That could hold any warmth after them.
يَخافُكُمُfears you قَلبيmy heart وَأَنتُمand you أَحِبَّةٌbeloved ones
كَأَنَّas though الأَعاديthe enemies يَنظُرونِيَlook at me شوساwith hostile, sidelong looks
My heart fears you, though you are beloved,
My heart fears you though you are loved ones,
As though enemies were glaring at me askance.
As if enemies look upon me with suspicion.
لَقَدindeed خِفتُI feared عَينيmy eye أَنthat تَكونَit might be طَليعَةًa scout
لَكُمfor you وَفُؤاديand my heart أَنthat يَكونَit might be دَسيساa covert agent
Indeed, I feared my eye might be a scout
Indeed I fear my eyes being a harbinger
For you, and that my heart might be a covert agent.
Of you, and my heart being a spy.
