قَدindeed آنَthe time has come أَنto يُسمِعَكَmake you hear الصوتُthe voice
أَنائِمٌis ... asleep? قَلبُكَyour heart أَمor مَيتُdead
The time has come for you to hear the voice.
It is time for my voice to reach you,
Is your heart asleep, or dead?
Is your heart asleep or dead?
ياO بانِيَbuilder of البَيتِthe house عَلىin غِرَّةٍheedlessness
أَمامَكَbefore you المَنزِلُthe dwelling وَالبَيتُand the house
O builder of the house in heedlessness,
O builder of a house on deceit,
Before you lie the dwelling and the house.
In front of you is the house and home.
أَيَجزَعُdoes ... grieve? المَرءُa person لِماover what فاتَهُhas eluded him
وَكُلُّand all ماthat which يُدرِكُهُhe attains it فَوتُloss
Does a man grieve over what has eluded him,
Should a person grieve what escaped him?
while all that he attains is loss?
Everything he attains will pass.
وَإِنَّماand only الدُنياthe world عَلىdespite طولِهاits length
ثَنِيَّةٌa mountain pass مَطلَعُهاits ascent المَوتُdeath
And this world, for all its length, is but
And this life in all its length,
a mountain pass whose ascent is death.
Is but a slope beginning with death.
