    The camels' froth is sweeter than your saliva,

    And desert herbage is more appetizing and more pleasant than you.

    وَعِندَ القَنا وَالخَيلِ وَاللَيلِ مَطلَبُ

    O my heart, I have no need of fair women;

    My quest lies with lances, horses, and the night.

    A sharp sword is dearest of my two faithful companions,

    And the guy-roped tent the pleasanter of my two homes.

    Whoever stays settled is abject before time's vicissitudes,

    And whoever roams abroad is a foe to the days.

    I have a seat upon the backs of Shadqamiyyat camels,

    And a mount upon the backs of Lahiqiyyat steeds.

    My veil is the horses' dust in every raid,

    My robe, tall lances and sharpened steel.

    I keep silent with some people, though speech would help,

    And sheathe my sword over some things, though striking would serve better.

    What made me aspire to glory is that I brave dangers,

    Bold against enemies, with a resourceful heart.

    Among what God has bestowed on me is a swimming steed,

    A swaying tawny spear, and a keen-cutting white sword.

    Wealth among humankind is nothing but spoils,

    Which we fight to defend; high honors are won by force.

    When my wealth dwindles, my companions dwindle; if it grows,

    I have kinfolk and welcome among all people.

    A man's wealth is honor; the poor man seems,

    To others, a mangy camel with both flanks smeared with tar.

    أَرى دونَها جاري دَمٍ يَتَصَبَّبُ

    My soul demands of me every mighty deed;

    Before it I see flowing blood pouring down.

    The abject bid me not to obey it,

    But I know which way to go among the paths of glory.

    If a man's love for something is a waste,

    Most wasted of all is what the reprover says.

    I am the sword, except that I am among people

    Where I find every sword left untried.

    I have no knowledge of the unseen, save a scout

    Of prudence, from which nothing hidden is concealed.

    فَيَصدُقُ مِنهُ الغَدرُ وَالوُدُّ يَكذِبُ

    I test the one I love before parting from him;

    His treachery proves true, while his affection proves false.

    The character of those I once chose changes toward me,

    And the days of those I once befriended betray me.

    Were a cloud to flash its lightning at me,

    I would avert my eyes, knowing its flash promised no rain.

    When I wish, I leave the beloved, though between us

    Is longing that dictates to me while I write.

    وَلَكِنَّني أَبكي زَماني وَأَندُبُ

    My love poetry is not because my heart holds anguish;

    Rather, I weep for my times and lament.

    Drawing near does me no good with the distant,

    Nor does keeping away harm me with the near.

    وَلَيسَ قَريباً مِنهُ مَن لا يُقَرَّبُ

    A man's kinsman, above all others, is his friend;

    No one is close to him who is not drawn close.

    وَلا الزَينُ إِلّا لِلفَتى يَومَ يَضرِبُ

    A sword-belt is no adornment to its wearer;

    Adornment belongs only to the youth on the day he strikes.

    War's brother is he on whom the sword has left its mark,

    Whose flanks give thrusts their paths and playground.

    Enough witness to a youth's courage,

    Which angers foes, is that spears are dyed with his blood.

    Toward a goal all humankind races:

    One walks slowly; another hastens.

    وَتُرخي المَنايا بُرهَةً ثُمَّ تَجذِبُ

    The length of his life's rope deceives a man;

    The fates give slack a while, then pull.

    أَلا كُلَّ حَيٍّ ماتَ عَنقاءُ مُغرِبُ

    They say the Anqa Mughrib cannot exist;

    Yet every living being that has died is an Anqa Mughrib.

    Long is the pale camels' toil while I ride them,

    And while I have resolve, judgment, and a course to follow.

    What made my heart's thirst easier to bear

    Was thirsty, weary camels shunning the watering place.

    I do not flag when I am thirsty,

    Nor does water give me strength the day I drink.

    Draught after draught leaves my burning thirst unquenched,

    Even if a watering place quenches the Da'iriyyat's thirst.

    وَفي جودِهِ دونَ الرَغائِبِ أَرغَبُ

    I have no recourse to anyone but al-Husayn;

    I desire his bounty above all coveted things.

    He dares a task that none attempts

    Among his people except a mighty man of resolute judgment.

    Indeed, a sire aided by a noble dam,

    Who begets a son like al-Husayn, has sired nobly.

    Any dwelling in which he settles is surely spacious,

    And any age in which he lives is surely sweet.

    وَلَو شاءَ ما اِستَولى عَلى الذَنبِ مُذنِبُ

    God bless you for overlooking a wrongdoer's crime;

    Had you wished, no sinner could have gained mastery over sin.

    Each day you seek a raid,

    Trailing and dragging the skirts of lofty lances.

    وَتَنزِلُ عَن أَمرٍ وَعَزمُكَ يَركَبُ

    You sleep upon a matter while your concern keeps vigil;

    You dismount from a matter while your resolve rides on.

    وَأَغضَت عَلى عِلمٍ نِزارٌ وَيَعرُبُ

    The tribes know for certain that you are their pride;

    Nizar and Ya'rub lower their eyes in full knowledge.

    At times, if you wish, you are cured of your foes

    By a spearpoint versed in thrusting and a sword's edge,

    And by horses that have, in every east and west,

    One felled and bloodied, or one pierced and stained with blood.

    When they rise into Najd, their faces shine,

    While before them the driving dust forms a deep darkness.

    The lances cry out in every tribe you seek,

    And a day of dire tumult lays enemies low through you.

    How many a circumstance has favored you, and a sudden strike

    With which you drove back Death's horn, though it was broken.

    Through it you struck fear into the enemy's heart,

    Then turned away while the deluded man played and sported.

    As an archer pierces his quarry with an arrow,

    Then turns away, knowing it will perish.

    Two foes: one is openly hostile

    And daring; the other is an instigator.

    وَهَذا طَويلُ الباعِ يَمري فَيَحلُبُ

    That one fearfully strokes evil's teat;

    This one, long of reach, coaxes milk, then milks.

    They seek error, while obstacles stand before them,

    And aim at oppression, while the fates bar the way.

    وَأَدبَرَ بِالباغي إِلى المَوتِ مَغرِبُ

    A sunrise bore you upward, ever climbing toward life;

    A sunset bore the rebel away toward death.

    Thus he is hated, as depravity willed,

    And you are loved, as chastity willed.

    وَغَيرُكَ بِالأَعيادِ وَاللَهوِ يُعجَبُ

    I congratulate you on the new feast as a diversion;

    It is others whom feasts and merriment delight.

    May its shades remain stretched over you,

    And may you ever move amid its blessings.

    May no rebel gain an opening against you,

    And may your foes never seek what you have sought.

    Your cloud overflows, your breeze is fresh,

    Your basin is full, your meadow lush with grass.

    When I speak verse of you, a praiser excels,

    A describer says much, an expansive praiser goes far.

    وَغَيرُ حَنيني عِندَ غَيرِكَ مُصحِبُ

    Others I praise only by straining;

    My yearning alone will not yield to anyone but you.

    The days hate that you are my sanctuary,

    And the sons of the days rage that you are my father.

    After the Prophet and the Legatee, can I admire

    The lineages of those ascribed and traced to glory?

    Every nomad and townsman acknowledges my merit,

    Yet this great, veiled man envies me.

    Who will find me one who longs for what I say,

    And hears from me what charms and delights?

    Were it not for verse's reward from those who desire it,

    I would find many to sing to who would delight in it.

    Indeed, the keeper of a camel herd tends his herd

    With protective care; the shepherd of men is bewildered and far astray.

    I love you all while I am counted among you,

    And while I have in you an aim and a quest.

    As for the dwelling that does not hold you, I am

    Always distant in affection, a stranger.

    Do not leave me bereft of manly honor,

    Nor content with the paltry, now pleased, now angered.

    I do not flag whenever you summon me,

    Nor is my stand a secret: you have witnessed it.

    Have I no settled place in ease and pleasure?

    For in adversity I float and sink.

    I ask God to decree a state

    In which an eye and a tormented heart find rest.

    And I ask that He grant you ample length of life,

    For I know that life is granted and bestowed.
