سُلَيمانُSulayman دَلَّتنيguided me يَداكَyour two hands عَلىto الغِنىwealth
وَأَجرَيتَand you set running ليfor me عَزماًresolve أَغَرَّwhite-blazed مُحَجَّلاwhite-socked
Sulayman, your two hands guided me to wealth,
Suleiman, your hands guided me to riches
And you set resolve galloping for me, white-blazed and white-socked.
And gave me a resolute purpose, tempting and grand
مَدَدتَyou lifted بِضَبعيby my upper arm جاهِداًstriving hard فَعَقَدتَso you secured ليfor me
مَصاداًa summit بِأَعنانِin the reaches of السَماءِthe sky وَمَعقِلاand a stronghold
You lifted me by my arm, striving hard, and secured for me
You propped up my ribcage as it struggled, and built for me
A summit in the reaches of heaven, and a stronghold.
A stronghold with the reins of the sky as its heights
وَعَلَّيتَنيand you raised me حَتّىuntil ظَنَنتُI thought بِأَنَّنيthat I
سَأَعبُرُI shall cross مِنfrom عَرضِthe breadth of المَجَرَّةِthe Milky Way جَدوَلاa brook
And you raised me so high that I thought I
You elevated me until I thought
Would cross a brook in the Milky Way's expanse.
I would cross the Milky Way’s expanse in a leap
فَكَيفَhow then اِرتِحاليmy departure عَنكَfrom you غَيرَwithout being مُزَوَّدٍprovisioned
وَياand oh رُبَّmany a زادٍprovision لاdoes not يُبَلِّغُbring one to مَنزِلاa resting place
How, then, can I depart from you without provisions?
So how could I leave you unequipped
And oh, many a provision fails to carry one to a resting place.
Oh Lord without provisions to reach my destination
وَلاand no سَيرَtravel إِلّاexcept أَنthat أَشُدَّI strap on حَقيبَةًa saddlebag
أَرىI see ضِمنَهاwithin it مِنfrom ضامِرِlean الزادِthe provisions أَبحَلاplump
And I cannot travel unless I strap on a saddlebag
I have no journey except to pack my bags
In which I see lean provisions grown plump.
And see in them only a few traces of supplies
وَإِلّاand if not فَزَوَّدنيthen provision me وَدادَكَyour affection إِنَّنيindeed I
أَسُلُّI draw عَلىagainst جَيشِthe army of الطَوىhunger مِنكَfrom you مُنصُلاa blade
Otherwise, provision me with your affection, for I
Unless you provide me your affection as provision, for I
Draw from you a blade against hunger's army.
Descend upon the army of departure relying on you
فَماfor ... not صِرتُI became حَربَan enemy of الدَهرِTime حَتّىuntil رَأَيتُهُI saw it
يُحارِبُwages war on مَنwhoever أَمسىreached dusk وَأَصبَحَand reached dawn مُرمِلاdestitute
For I did not become Time's enemy until I saw it
I did not become the war of fate until I saw it
Waging war on whoever reaches dusk and dawn destitute.
Fight those who woke and slept jaded
وَكُنتُand I used to إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle ناكَرَتنِيَturned hostile to me بَلدَةٌa town
فَزِعتُI sought refuge إِلىto الجُردِthe sleek-coated steeds العَناجيجِthe noble steeds وَالمَلاand the open plains
And whenever a town turned hostile to me, I would
And whenever a land rejected me
Seek refuge in sleek, noble steeds and the open plains.
I fled to the bare hills and sought refuge
وَمَنand whoever كانَwas مَهجوراًforsaken كَماjust as أَناI فيكُمُamong you
فَماso ... not يَستَحيfeels ashamed before الأَيّامَthe days أَنthat تَتَبَدَّلاthey should change
And whoever is forsaken, as I am among you,
And whoever is outcast among you like me
Feels no shame in asking the days to change.
Should not be ashamed as days change
