Since my companions went far away, tears are near.

And longing calls, and sighing answers.

I did not know that, on the day of parting from you,

eyes and hearts would spare me.

If, on the morning of your farewell, my liver did not

melt, then I know that it will melt.

An illness for which I sought physicians; yet there was

no healer but the solace found in tears.

If I stay, my tears are victorious

over my reproachers, while my fortitude is defeated.

They left an ailing man behind them, whose recovery is not

hoped for, nor do hopes placed in him fail.

Like one driven off on watering day, whose raging thirst has lasted long,

so he came to hover about death and circle thirstily.

In his heart and on both his flanks, from thirst

and from being pelted away from the watering pools, are scars.

He is grief-stricken; his patience rallies for a spell,

a brief one; then, with anguish's prodding, it vanishes.
