    Our neighbors departed from Minā,

and said, “Al-Naqā is our meeting place.”

And can a thirsty one's words quench thirst,

when the caravan has gone far—“May they not be far!”?

They called to one another: “Separation is tomorrow.”

A curse on you, O tomorrow—what an ill omen!

So, by God, what al-Maʾzimān has gathered—

and Jamʿ and the mosque—for my heart!

The evening drinking-bowl is lost, then sought,

while my heart is lost and is not sought.

And a graceful maiden, among those who defer their debts,

has a time of languid ease in the preserve.

She turns back, as a gazelle turned,

at Dhū al-Bān, when the watering place appeared before her.

You gazed—yet far from your eyes

are Tihāmah's gazelles, O traveler to Najd.

And oh, how often—love is delusion—

the eye sees what the hand cannot reach.
