O you who feel safe from fate, forestall its reversals,

and know that the pursuers are swift.

Take what you can from your inheritance, for

your partners are none but the days and the heirs.

None have given wealth its due but those

who found time ravaging it, and ravaged it themselves.

The hand of wealth heaps dust over the rich man's fault,

while poverty searches keenly for a young man's fault.

A man's wealth is truly his insofar as it fulfills

    desires, or wards off misfortunes.

Whatever of it exceeds his sustenance,

so let him know for certain that it is an inheritance.

    فَليَخزَ ساحِرُ كَيدِها النَفّاثُ

    I have no need of the deceitful world;

so may the spell-blowing sorcerer of her guile be disgraced.

I divorced her a thousand times to eradicate her disease,

though for one resolved to divorce, three divorces suffice.

Her moments of calm are to be feared, and her pledges

are broken, and her ropes are unraveled.

Mother of calamities—unceasingly we are terrified

by male and female misfortunes that come from her.

I truly marvel at men who clung

to the world's snares, though they are worn-out.

They hoarded treasures and neglected their desires,

so the earth is sated while bellies go hungry.

Do you think they did not know that piety

is our provision, and our dwellings are graves?
