أَياO شاكِياًyou who complain مِنّيabout me لِذَنبٍfor a sin جَنَيتُهُI committed it
فَدَيتُكَmay I be your ransom مِنas a شاكٍcomplainer إِلَيَّto me حَبيبِbeloved
O you who complain of me for a sin I committed,
O you who complain of my sin which I have committed,
May I be your ransom, beloved who complains to me!
I ransom you from a complainer who is dear to me.
لَئِنif indeed رابَaroused doubt مِنّيfrom me ماwhat يُريبُcauses suspicion فَإِنَّنيthen indeed I
عَلىdespite عُدَواءِadversity الدَهرِtime غَيرُnot مُريبِa cause for doubt
If something from me has aroused suspicion, then indeed I am,
If he doubts anything dubious from me, surely I
despite time's adversity, no cause for doubt.
Am not dubious about the adversities of fate.
وَإِنّيand indeed I لَأَرعىsurely preserve مِنكَfrom you وَالغَيبُwhile absence بَينَناis between us
هَوىًa love قَلَّماrarely يُرعىis preserved بِظَهرِbehind the back of مَغيبِabsence
And I faithfully preserve for you, though absence lies between us,
And I shepherd from you, though distance is between us,
a love seldom preserved when one is out of sight.
A love that is rarely shepherded at the setting of a shepherd.
فَهَبso forgive لِيَme ذَنباًa sin واحِداًsingle كانَwas قُلتُهُI said it
فَماfor not زَلَلٌa lapse مِنfrom حازِمٍa prudent man بِعَجيبِat all strange
So forgive me one sin in something I had said;
So grant me just one sin I may have spoken,
for a lapse from a prudent man is nothing strange.
For stumbling is not strange for a resolute man.
فَياso, O حُسنَbeauty حالِthe state of الوُدِّaffection ماas long as دَمتُI remain مُذنِباًa sinner
أَتوبُI repent وَماand not ضامَتwronged تُعَدُّare counted ذُنوبيmy sins
So how fair is the state of love, so long as I remain a sinner!
So O beauty of the state of love, as long as I remain a sinner
I repent, and my sins, as they are counted, have wronged no one [wording uncertain].
I repent, and my transgressions are not counted as sins.
