ياO عاذِلانِtwo reproachers أَسَأتُماyou both erred العَذلاthe reproach
لاno مَرحَباًwelcome بِكُماto you both وَلاnor أَهلاa warm reception
O you two reproachers, you have erred in your reproach.
O you who blame, you have blamed unjustly,
No welcome to you both, nor a warm reception!
You are not welcome, nor greeted.
أَعَذَلتُماhave you both reproached? مَنone who لَمnot يَمَلَّtire of هَوىًlove
وَتَرَكتُماand you both left off عَذلَreproaching الَّذيthe one who مَلّاgrew weary
Have you both reproached one who has not tired of love,
You blamed one whose love does not tire,
and left off reproaching the one who has,
And left blaming one who did tire.
وَلَحَوتُماand you both censured المَقتولَthe one killed مِنby كَمَدٍanguish
وَعَذَلتُماand you both reproached مَنthe one who طَرَّقَpaved the way for القَتلاkilling
and censured the one slain by anguish,
You sought the slain with pretense,
and reproached the one who paved the way for killing?
And blamed the one who avoided murder.
لَوif أَنَّthat غَيرَother than دَميmy blood ذَهَبتِyou (feminine) went away بِهِwith it
لَمnot تُسأَليyou (feminine) would be asked قَوَداًretaliatory punishment وَلاnor عَقلاblood money
Had you taken anything other than my blood,
Had another's blood been shed by you,
you would not be asked for retaliation or blood money.
You'd not be asked for legal death payment or compensation.
