    بَيضٌ طَرَدنَ عَنِ الذَوائِبِ سودا

    O Umaym, your brother has indeed curbed his unruliness;

    White hairs have driven black ones from his tresses.

    Time's successive turns, when they pass over a young man,

    Like crushing calamities, leave nothing fresh.

    فَاليَومَ راحَ عَنِ الحِسانِ طَريدا

    Before you, he had been the prey of beautiful women;

    So today he has departed from the beauties, driven away.

    They turned their eyes away from him in aversion,

    With looks of loathing, and turned their cheeks away from him.

    He sought to play the youth after youth was lost—

    A far-off aim, by your life, O Umaym.
