    Nothing of proud defiance remains in me except the

    gaze reddened with anger,

    غَيظِ وَشَكوى وَقائِعِ النُوَبِ

    and biting my palm against Time, out of

    rage, and lamenting the blows of calamities;

    or a sigh that makes the ribs seem

    like curved bow frames shooting flames.

    Gone are those men; ever since they parted

    from me, Time has been toying with me.

    I say, now that I have lost their aid:

    Oh, my mother's anguish for you, and my father's!
