Night and day are filled by the reach of my resolve,

and the calamities of time lose their way within it.

A resolve suckled on the milk of spearpoints,

where a breast suckles on freshly shed blood.

How many a calamity's belly have I split to its core,

and spilled the blood of grudges into its blood.

While night's shirt was torn open to reveal the morning,

I nearly patched it with my stallion's dust.

Its stars seemed the faces of secluded maidens,

veiled with sleeves against the thick dust.

And I emerged from its hindmost reaches, after

drowsiness had tugged at the riders' turbans.

In a trackless waste whose ridges drought had polished,

never once rusted by a heavy, pouring rain.

A land chaste from the touch of rain,

though land is praised for being unchaste toward it.

Then a cloud flung itself over it with rain,

and slaked drought's burning thirst with streaming showers.

So rain folded up the cloak of gauntness, and

the earth's dead remains unfurled the branches' tresses.

As though the east wind's breaths within its lap

were shedding the rain-clouds' tears into the hollows.

Tears that, whenever they overflowed, fashioned eyes

in the pools wherever they came to rest.

And from their leaves it shows you crescents:

beneath the sun, the fleeing gazelles.

How often have I bound the bonds of discourse with a speech

that, by its decisive force, untied the knots of fate.

I have an ambition I shall surely endow with spear-splinters,

in pursuit of the two days of battle and racing.

Were it to wage war on the vault of heaven, it would part

    the Pleiades there from Aldebaran.

The mark of my might is my Indian sword's assault,

and my enemy's doom is my tongue's long reach.

Do not set me beside Time, for it is

an old camel rubbing its neck against my own.

Indeed, I eye these mortals while keeping aloof,

with an eye whose pupil is untamed.

I strike with the courage of a youth whose sword scatters

the army of Death when the two hosts meet.

From the house of Adnan, for whom it is enough

that the son of Musa is among the sons of Adnan.

Those who dismount when the spears clash,

and white blades emerge from their sheaths.

They fill the bellies of their quivers whenever they

gird themselves with the surplus locks of the brave.

They donned turbans once they saw their swords

forever humbling the seats of crowns.

When al-Husayn summoned them with their steeds,

they were mustered to him, their ears held taut.

Coming forth in quick succession, charging

like the hungry spitting out Qurran's date-stones.

A lion through whom spear-thrusts shed the spears' blood

with the blood of the people of idolatry and tyranny.

When they feared shattering in throats,

he made hearts into amulets for the spearheads.

Without him, no sword-edges would have been forged for clashing,

ever, nor spears cut for thrusting.

How splendid was your day at Ghuwayth! It was

a day that brings grief to the sons of Ghaylan.

At the fortress, when the spears summoned their heads

and took refuge within the horsemen's bodies.

The moisture of their faces ebbed for fear of death,

so it was as though it had flooded into their eyelids.

You fell upon them at dawn with a hand whirling sword-edges,

and a hand driving in the points of ashwood spears.

Supple, they shake the man they pierce, till you think him,

amid the thrusting, leaping toward his opponents.

You cut Death's breath short by their racing,

until he stumbled among heads and bodies.

As though the spears had lost their way in battle,

until they turned back, sniffing out every heart.

And the horses stumble among the spearpoints,

stained with the hearts' scalding blood.

Arrows covered their exposed parts, as though they had

put on ostrich tunics to face you.

Had the breaths of the winds risen

in their dust, they would have flown with the eagles.

You waded through the darkness toward them on hooves

that had waded through the hearts of fiery hearths.

And you slashed their night's thick tresses with keen swords

that joined the links of dawn with their flashes.

Darkness drew back, and you set the enemies' necks

as targets for the reach of bent sharyan bows.

So you left them slain in every wilderness,

as though fallen thunderstruck upon their chins.

Vultures conceal their bodies with their plumage

from the gaze of lion and wolf.

Their beaks dug into the wounds, as though

by digging, they measured each spearpoint's stroke.

Until you returned with young warriors who had shattered spears

and shot with every resounding bow.

Had they been able, they would have joined to every straightened spear—

one that brands throats in the thrusting—every finger.

Lions whose hard riding pared the flesh of their steeds,

through charges, repeated blows, and spear-thrusts.

Had they been knotted one to another in the night march,

they would have served it in place of halters.

Your battle gladdens the sons of Adnan, the battle that

lifted religion and faith by the arm.

Had the enemies' necks not been unbound, they would have knotted

the fringes of sorrow with the bonds of hearts.

Lead her, for her blaze is fashioned from fresh-picked words,

and her white stockings from artistry and meanings.

She is a drop I drew shimmering from my mind,

white, quenching the thirsty one's burning thirst.
