May the cup never visit the ailing breeze

after me, nor may the seal of cares be broken,

on a night whose full moon vanished with me,

and the stars warred against her in the darkness.

May no tipsy man drag his hem

within her, nor may the vines pour forth upon her.

    شَيَّعَهُ القَلبُ وَراءَ الحَريم

    I am absent, yet my longing is present with her;

my heart escorted it beyond the protected precincts.

It came while darkness wore a pallid cloak,

and returned when the sky's skin was polished.

If my heart were unfettered within my breast,

it would run to her upon the breeze's rein.

O night that lowers her glances,

as though she were kohled with clouds!

How many a night like you have I worn out,

while wine was passed from the drinking companion's waistcloth.

From sheer beauty, when I visit her, she almost

brings healing to the ailing crescent moon,

in a gathering whose sides were set aright

by the closeness of union and the nearness of bliss.

He unveils the cup to me from her curtained chamber—

a fair-skinned man, lofty of branch, with flourishing roots.

    Beauty clung to his limbs,

so he swayed, and branches do not stand straight.

Dignified in character, should they contest

his words on the day of debate—the adversaries,

where the tassels of knee-wraps leap

with the men, until reason takes flight.

He lends me affection despite his distance,

and with his dwelling near, what an excellent intimate friend!

Enemies barred me from his watering place,

while an abiding yearning for water lives within me.

I am barred from walking proudly in his land,

while he grazes in that luxuriant domain.

If they rebuff my thirst—ah, how often

have young camels driven mature camel studs from the water!

After their chests had been stretched

    over hearts with bleeding wounds,

each day there are unsheathed from them

stinging words that wound the forbearance of the forbearing.

The downpours of rain revived a dwelling

where, for us, the old days had died.

In days when the meadow greeted morning with joy,

and we beheld those hills and traces of dwellings.

How often Time dyed the soil's shirt,

and the earth's parchment returned with its tattoos exposed!

    فَالآنَ أَضحى وَهوَ لَيثٌ شَتيم

    And Time was a wild-cow calf in our dwellings;

but now he has become a grim-faced lion.

In days when we sent forth from our promises

lions that preyed upon the pauper's poverty.

You would see within the folds of our dwelling places

generosity's fertilizing seed for barren hope.

I find solace in the fringes of lightning, yet I do not

know whether to lower my gaze before it or scan it for rain.

I fear the assault of its downpour,

and between us, from its cloud-darkness, rise the hills of Rim.

I shun his haunts, though the distance between us

would not vex a she-camel trotting across it.

And once I never left his dwellings,

with my tent pitched between forenoon and dark night.

I would steal, in my run to his dwelling,

the wolf's lope and the male ostrich's speed.

O debt of my heart, what burning anguish is yours,

revisiting the heart like the recurring pangs of the snake-bitten!

Say to him who owes me the debts of love:

O, how welcome from you is the debtor's delay!

I have condemned an age whose vicissitudes never ceased

to visit me by night as envoys of vile deeds.

I find sorrow, when sorrow's ordeal grows grave,

more generous than the miserly nature of consolation.

And closeness in affection, despite our distance,

is better than enemies' nearness in body.

My affection is too noble, before its suitors,

to join its cord to anyone but the noble.
