May the adornment of soft-raining spring grace you,

And may the stream of the thundering clouds water you.

And may it come at dawn with rain bidding you farewell,

Not out of aversion, and with dew greeting you.

    فَاليَومَ لي عَجَبٌ مِنَ المُتَبَسِّمِ

    Before your death I used to reproach whoever wept;

Today I marvel at anyone who smiles.

    فَاليَومَ أَعلَمُهُ بِما لَم يَعلَمِ

    And I used to keep my tears from wetting my eye sockets;

Today I teach them what they never knew.

Never, after you, shall I tell my tear ducts to hold back

A tear, even if my tears are drawn from my blood.

Indeed Ibn Musa—life lasts only to a term—

Yielded the reins with a nose never before haltered.

And passed away with his garment washed clean, unstained,

And died pure of stock, without a blemish.

And his spotless honor and good name protected him

From clasping both hands around the gleaming dirham.

    إِنَّ الغَنِيَّ قَذىً لِطَرفِ المُعدِمِ

    He needed nothing from the world and was a choking bone in its throat;

The wealthy man is a mote in the penniless man's eye.

He filled the age with gifts and wounds,

Striking among men with misery and blessings.

    فَبَلَغنَ أَبعَدَ غايَةِ المُستَخدَمِ

    And put the days to work for his purposes;

They reached the farthest limit of service.

Today I have sheathed the Indian-forged sword in the earth,

And buried the heights of Mutaliʿ and Yalamlam.

And the noses of high honor and its hands have become

Either bereft of nose or bereft of hand after him.

Radiant with generosity whenever bounty was sought,

He rained bounty close at hand, never clouding over.

Joyous, the assemblies of high honor revealed in him

A face of noble cheek, never slapped.

He met financial burdens with his inherited wealth, then turned away

With a cool heart, as though he had paid nothing.

The giver of bellowing camels, as his custom was,

From a man with two giving hands, who never regretted generosity.

Spring's ruddy growth brought them forth, tall-grown,

Red, as though they were roots of red dyewood.

Grazing on fresh herbs at al-Ladid and Rama,

Among lances pulled free and splintered.

In the hands of a radiant man who brought back the lance-banners

After battles, with blood wrung from them.

And told his noble soul, 'Yield yourself,'

On the day of battle, not, 'Keep yourself safe.'

Death called him, and his last injunction was

To bestow prized gifts and shoulder financial burdens.

When a noble man departs, does he leave

Anything but enduring honors and generosity?

Generosity refuses to leave wealth with a man,

And small is the inheritance of the generous benefactor.

Your virtues filled the lands and roamed

Through the earth, the knowing casting them before the blind.

Your glory is like lightning in a raincloud

Before all eyes, and a white blaze on a black horse.

    خَبَطَ المَغارَ بِهِنَّ مَن لَم يُجرِمِ

    I announce your death to the lean raiding horses;

One who had done no wrong drove them into the raid.

Like a herd sensing a faint sound from a hunter,

It sped on, its rear crowding into its front.

    لا يَهتَدي فيهِ البَنانُ إِلى الفَمِ

    The day stung eyes with its dust;

Fingers could not find their way to the mouth within it.

Only a thin glimmer of its sun remained,

Like the narrow opening over a veiled rider's face.

One waded in deep blood, drenched

    As by dew, by the downpour of splintering lances;

Or plucked the thorns of lances from his skin,

    Out of every gaping wound, like a cleft-lipped man's mouth;

Or escaped the spearpoint, carried to safety by

A frightened mare that yielded no cheekstrap to a bridler.

False alarm made him start, and he dreaded

The bitter tale of every dire battle-day.

The brave man's account of a thrust terrified him,

From a slender spear, or a blow from a keen sword,

Until he thought the dawn a drawn sword

Swooping upon him with a warrior bearing his battle-mark.

And an adversary, as speech displayed its robes—

Among them, cross-striped and arrow-patterned ones.

The loud-mouthed bowed before them and yielded

To the roar of the prized stud-camel's throat-pouch.

With judgment that minds must accept

In calamities, without asking how or why.

He rose to bear great troubles and financial burdens,

And went along the clear, straightest road,

Until, when the tugging rubbed his flanks raw

And the halter settled against his nose and muzzle,

He cast off the loads, leaving none after him

To bear the greatest burden in a great calamity.

Like a spent camel, his flanks had grappled with ceaseless toil,

As shoulders chafe against a leather-covered rein.

Kings slept secure in the resolve of a radiant man, whose judgment

Was daybreak to dim-eyed, slumbering minds.

Calamities fell away from him as though they were

The hair of an oft-branded camel, sizzling beneath the branding iron.

When young camels sank beneath their weight,

They would tell this great old camel, 'Go forward!'

By my life, they cast their sorrows upon a dispeller

In him, and stoned calamities with a stone-thrower.

As though they clashed lances with ʿUtayba at their side,

And faced their foes with Rabiʿa ibn Mukaddam.

A charmer of grudges, drawing out their sharp edges,

Until he altered the nature of the speckled serpent's venom.

Ninety-seven years seized your foes for you,

Until they passed away and you remained without reproach.

They never matched your pace throughout those years, though

They had hoped; relentless Time's intervention held them back.

Except for remnants of your dust, which became

Choking obstructions and motes in an eye or mouth.

If they follow your heels in pursuit of high honor,

The wolf, too, lopes along the lion's path.

Is there a father like mine for a calamity's wound

Beyond cure, and a mighty breach still unmended?

The calamities that strike by night have bereaved us

Of the proud man's refuge and the armored man's shield,

Of one long spared, held back among those remaining,

And hastened, placed foremost among those gone before.

The pure son of the pure; whoever descends

Through a father from prophethood's stock grows great.

From a people who took noble deeds as their sustenance,

And drank their fill of the mightiest, most ancient honor:

Givers, defenders, or slaughterers of feast-camels,

Or showerers of bounty, benefactors, or humblers of foes.

They reserved all their care for lofty glory,

And thought little of perishable gain.

A dense thicket whose branches faced one another

In glory, upright stem interwoven with upright stem.

They pass noble deeds from one to another by birth,

Between grandsire and son in noble deeds.

I told the envious, when they exchanged

The anguish of burning hearts and the gnashing of molars:

Do not envy those who follow one another toward greatness,

And hold mastery over the loftiest hump,

And the spear-thrusters, each forefather a mighty lancer,

And the showerers of bounty, each gift thunderous.

Yours are the leftovers whenever a battle takes place,

Or a raid; theirs is the choicest spoil.

Fragrant are they, yet your noses gain from their perfume

At gatherings only the smell of humiliating dust.

They lean upon greatness ancient as ʿAd,

And noble deeds of old, and age-old glory,

Giving ever more when asked, while among you

The mother of lizards bears one at a time, never twins.

So cling to the rump of humiliation, and stop

Raising your eyes to the greatest edifice.

Those are the lions; who can drag away their prey,

Or pass through their densely tangled forest?

Their graves were laid at the edges of the lands,

Star-patterns on the ceilings of a dark night.

The clan's nobility is proved enough when you see

Its graves scattered before travelers in Najd or Tihama.

They were reckoned mountains of high honor, though they became

Mingled strains of glory in crumbling bones.

Within those slabs and sepulchers were laid

The loads of a thick-fringed cloud, rumbling with thunder.

Tears watered their earth in showers,

So they needed no drops from clouds or skies.

A grave in Babylon, its burial stones fitted together

As a covering over bounty's thunderous rain.

It holds generosity in the fold of his waist-wrap,

And glory in its still-unopened blossoms.

Do not deem the resting place enclosed by his sepulcher

A grave: it is the setting-place of one of the stars.

You have bared my back to foes, even if it were guarded

By the multitude of a vast, tightly thronging host.

And exposed my fatal weak point to the days,

Until, after you, they turned my own arrows back upon me.

    فَاليَومَ لا يُخطينَ شاكِلَةَ الرَمِي

    You used to stand between me and their arrows;

Today they never miss the flank they shoot at.

Will you hear my grievance against Time

For its crimes, while to Time itself I complain?

    فَتَشَزَّني لِوَقائِعي وَاِستَسلِمي

    Tell calamities, 'I shall pardon you no stumble;

Brace yourselves for my battles, and surrender.'

    وَإِذا المَضارِبُ أَمكَنَتكَ فَصَمِّمِ

    Never forgive a visiting calamity when it wrongs you;

And when a strike is within your power, drive it home.

For the fool is one who leaves harm unrequited

And waits for an excuse from a wrongdoer.

And a poem woven like mail, its links perfected

By a craftsman who spoke clearly in a tongue-tied age:

I kept her unwed awhile, seeking her equal,

And led her as a bride to you—how fine a husband for the unwed!

I have lodged, though I was never humbled,

In the house of the humiliated, while you are honor itself.
