Love returned through the gazelles of Mecca,

to hearts, as it first took hold of them.

And at Mina, for you, died down

the torments of passion and all that had stirred them.

    Rapture upon rapture through her—

oh, your heart's bondage to its burning longing for her!

Indeed, at Mina I fell in love with

a dark-lipped woman: her lips' dark hue kills me.

She departed with the gazelles, having

toyed with my heart to her heart's content.

She seeks reward; then this heart of mine—

    this wounded one—who shot it?

She vaunts herself above those gazelles—

would that I knew who fathered her!

    Love halted me beside her,

and her two eyes carried my heart away.

She brought me coolness, as though

her two cheeks were a cloud's dew.

    A sun—I kiss her neck

on the day of parting, and revere her mouth.

And I hold back a thirsty heart

that, told 'Your watering-place!' would go no farther than her.

And if it could, it would surely flow

along her sash's course around her waist.

    O day when companions parted,

will you return, I wonder, for a meeting with her?

She said her phantom would visit you by night

    from al-Aqiq, despite her distance.

So promise your phantom to an eye

that, if you are absent, yearns for sleep.

Indeed, I have drunk of love

a red wine poured by its two cupbearers.

O spreading tree upon the plain, never

has its soil been wetted with anything but my blood.

    Inaccessible—neither its shade

comes near me, nor its fruit.

Is this how my soul melts away for you all,

    without attaining its desires?

A body turned over in wasting illness

by the hands of a little female healer other than her.

Where are the faces I love

and wish I could ransom with my life?

I spend the evening searching for them

among those visiting the sick, yet do not see them.

Oh! Were it not that I would be reproached

by the faultfinders, I would cry, 'Ah!'
